Problems after new front shocks fitted

Hi all.
I've just had new front shocks and top mounts fitted at a local garage. When I left the garage forecourt there was a loud creaking from my steering that was definitely not there before. As I drove out I stopped to ask one of the mechanics about it and he said to run it around for a week or so and let things settle. I did this and while the noise had quietened to an almost crackling noise it was still there and not getting any quiter so the car went back in.
They put some more grease on the top mounts and sorted my wheel alignment out (which was off slightly before the new shocks). The noises from the steering are now a lot better but this last couple of days I've now noticed an intermittent knocking from the nearside front when I hit some bumps/holes in the road. The front end just doesn't feel as "tight" as it should do - if that's a good way to describe it!
I know the garage will have it back, they're not being funny about it, but does anyone have any idea what's going on so I could maybe make a quiet suggestion when I ring and book it back in?
