Hi all .

I drive a cordy TDI 130 and i believe that it has a pd engine under the bonnet

I was just wondering if the pd engine has any advantages or disadvantages over a normal diesel ,

Many thanks ,

Mark

yep, higher injection pressure, thus better fuel atomisation so better fuel economy and higher power output.

Disadvantages - can be noisier than common rail (which is the other type of diesel around now adays, where as previously it was rotary injection) Can be slightly higher repair bills due to the type of injection system.

theres more but im busy.....

Stew said it all really, compared with CR engines the PDs are usually develop more torque.

Instead of having one fuel pump which then distributes the fuel via a "rail" at high pressure, the PD engines have one cam-driven mechanical pump per cylinder, integrated with the injectors. These generate very high pressures and give fine control over the injection period. (The fact they're cam driven is the reason why PDs need special oil, to prevent camshaft wear).
Also, because the pumps are embedded in the cylinder head, there is no external pipework carrying fuel under high pressure, which has to be good news in an accident scenario....
