Remap vs Chip

Hi guys,

I sort of know what the answer is going to be here ('Get a remap why are you even asking?!') but just wanted to check!

I have the Ibiza FR 1.4 TSI (61 plate) and want to get it a bit faster.

I'd like to do the remap but I would want it done by someone who is well regarded (i.e. the P-Torque guy who's on the forums here, who I have emailed), but he's about 4 hours away from where I am so unless I have no other option, I'd rather not be doing that round trip..

SO.. is there any issue with this chip (http: // w w w. dieseltuningbox.com/store/index.php?route=product/product&path=20_230_558&product_id=1541) instead of a remap? I know that a lot of people say chips trick the car into dumping in more fuel, but will that chip just do the same? As it looks like it's set up specifically for the car (though that could just be to flesh their product selection out a bit more..?)

Also, I'm running a CAVF engine (which I assume is the same as the CAVE on the Cupra, just with a different map?) so if it has the issue with the oil and needs a new engine, will a remap cause issues with the warranty on the engine? As I could just unplug the chip and I'd be fine.

Thanks!

ps: sorry about the link, I'm not allowed to link to the site as <15 posts..

I personally will be choosing a tuning box as I don't want to ruin my warranty, a remap is better but will most likely cost more and ruin a warranty, the box can be removed when your car needs any work or just a trip to the dealer :) id go with the box.

DTUK seem to have good reviews on here and offer a discount for members. Several people have written good reviews on here for them. I'd personally go for the DTUK box.

don`t bother you won`t even notice any difference!

I beg to differ as for a start I bought mine of turboboy/Robbie drake, drove down to reading at 60/70mph to save fuel and after having it fitted didn't realise but drove back at 80mph and used the same amount of fuel as the way down. As for performance it's 1second quicker both 0-60 and 1/4 mile, granted these aren't an everyday feature but does prove it at least does something

Ever considered that people have price budgets, insurance budgets, company car limits? It's very very common for people to remap cars now, and it does make a big difference.

My old 1.2tsi leon was mapped from 105bhp to 129bhp. I currently have a defender td5 which is also remapped to approx 160-170bhp.

Have to agree with the above. Considering that mapping is at the heart of so many modifications and also that a lot of the more powerful cars sold by manufacturers which share the same engine are only different in terms of mapping ie. the 1.2 tsi which is available in 105 hp and 85 hp. I could go on here, but you get the idea lol. Rant over.

Hmm I'm thinking about this I was going to get a remap but I've heard with this car they have to open the ecu and do it that way and I'm still in warranty so I don't want it to be noticeable. Is this detectable with vagcom or dealer map readers?

Your ecu will probably need unlocking which means they'll have to remove it. Most usually replace the anti tamper bolts so visually you can't tell, but yes, dealers can detect the remap. You'll only have issues with warranty if your remap is proven to have caused the issue (I.e you have an engine issue). Probably better with a tuning box if you want to keep warranty in tact though.

What's the average price for a box and average out come? I always throughout they were more of a chavvy easy fix for a sh*t box, no offence to anyone just what I had always heard, tbh if they are just as good and avoid warrenty issues I may have to invest!

Dtuk have 80 quid off for forum members. There are others but with inflated gains, cheap prices, and no reviews rings alarm bells.

As you said its an investment, as it can be sold on and 5 yr warranty.
