Hi guys,

I'm looking to get my Cupra mapped but was just wondering would would be best to do before I get it mapped to get the best from the map.

Cheers.

There's probably a few threads already open on this topic but I started a new thread when I had mine done.

I can advise you on a few things.

Firstly in my eyes there are only 2 maps that are worth every penny you pay if your after performance and not negative performance but loud noises and pops

Revo and APR very reputable and very formal about giving information on cars and mods. The performance gains through the rev range and increase in tourqe are incredible whilst also working within the safety of the stock parts limits. It transforms your car.

Do not get a cheap **** £300 map or a crap dtuk chip/gizmo.

Pay the 600-700 quid and get the results

I've just got myself a cupra, gone from a mk2 diesel fr to a mk3 Cupra, Does it do anything for your mpg? While you're trundling along minding your own business on your way to work I'm meaning!

Get a steady 30mpg up to 90mph when throttle is steady.

Hit speeds of 170-182mph and get there very quick

What ever you decide don't get a quantum remap, caused me no end of grief
Had the car put back to factory spec and all is well now.

Yep can't stress enough how much of a **** bag these mappers at 300 quid and dyno run will cost you in the long run. I've heard of that name be for where is that from ?

I'm looking at a BlueFin remap device from Superchips.

They've recently released their product for the 280.

About £500 with the handheld device which enables you to restore when necessary.

Takes the 280 to around 335BHP.

Anyone got the BlueFin?

Full ecu remap with the complete original file being overwritten and saved on to servers for back up with live logging health check and rolling road and professional advice.

Or straight up your doing it your self, 6 of those things sold on awesome gti. Hundreds if not thousands of apr and revo files are on cupras.

What is wrong with dtuk box?

If you want the best don't bother with generic mapping .

Speak to Rick at unicorn motor developments, he is getting fantastic results with these lumps in the Mk7 R.

I'll be visiting him once warranty is kaput

Dtuk isn't a full ecu map the devices cheating the fuel injectors and boost, eventually one will go.

Generic...... revo and APR you ???

360 bhp stage 1 and why are you waiting for your warranty to be up ?

I had revo stage 2 on my Golf and I would call that a generic map , no live data logging. Basicall plugged in upped boost , fuel & timing from 0 to 9 . No tweaking to take into account for individual engine tolerance differences. Car ran ok but lean at top end.

Ricks work on the mk7 Rs he has done speaks for itself. Lots of his customers have been tuning box owners not happy with how their car ran on the box before going to him . He has been know to spend 9 hours mapping 1 car as he won't let the car go until he is satisfied with how it's running.

He also spent a lot of time looking into the reason the IHI turbo seems to be so prone to failure even in standard cars and now offers a solution to the poor balancing of the compressor wheel.

Why am I waiting until my warranty runs out??

I've been stung before by a dealer refusing warranty work because of tuning being carried out on the car , and with the TD1 flag system VAG are using now it's not worth the hassle

A post Rick put up on VWROC

"Golf R Turbo Failures
Hello all,

long time no post, lots going on here, tuning development etc etc.

I have tuned over 80 Golf R's, and of those cars 4 have had turbo failures. That's 1 in 20, which is not a good stat. I have also had a number of customers that have booked their car in have to cancel, due to to the turbo failing on completely standard tune.

The last of these failures occurred earlier this week while on my dyno. This was frustrating but as I was logging at the time it allowed me to study first hand. The car had done one flawless power run, and then failed on the second. Data logs showed everything was perfect, with boost at 1.5 bar at the time of failure. This is less boost than virtually every tune available for the Golf R runs.

So what's happening? Obviously I was keen to find out. The IS38 turbo borrows technology from Motorsport and employs a "zero clearance" compressor design. There is (virtually) no clearance between the compressor wheel and housing. This improves efficiency and contributes to the incredible performance of the turbo. The compressor housing is lined with a Teflon insert, as the compressor wheel will come into contact with it in normal operation.

The issue is that batches of the turbo have not been balanced properly. A number of turbos have now been stripped and examined, only to find the balancing is out by a very large margin on a number of turbos. This causes the compressor wheel to move off centre slightly. On a "normal" turbo this wouldn't be an issue, but on the IS38 the compressor wheel is hitting the Teflon insert, digging in - and snapping the shaft instantly. In other cases, it is undoing the the retaining nut and then causing even more of a mess. The shaft diameter is considerable - it's a very strong shaft but when it suddenly goes form 100,000 Rpm to zero something is going to give.

Early 2014 cars have had the most failures, but the failures are not isolated to these. We have seen failures on 16 and 66 plate cars as well. No failures yet seen on 15 plate cars, including mine which had run well over 2 bar during development.

The IS20 found in the Golf GTI turbo does not suffer from this issue, it also has a much smaller/weaker shaft diameter but is properly balanced.

We are now recommending that anyone tuning their Golf R has the turbo checked over for balance. Pricing is not expensive - around £250 - but there is obviously the labour involved in removing the turbo, and the 3-4 days the car would have to be off the road. The compressor insert is checked and re profiled to correct clearances, and then the rotating assembly placed on a VSR balancer to check and be adjusted as required. Options to hybrid the turbo will also soon be available but these are not required for Stage1/2 tunes.

This is not any kind of ploy to extract money out of anyone, but born out of the frustration of trying to tune an incredible platform with a major weakness. Anyone is free to send their turbo to any specialist turbo company that can perform a proper balancing operation.

Thanks, Rick"

Exact same plan as me! Will be going to unicorn once my warranty is up too. Check out his Instagram page. He's getting between 360-380bhp on stage 1. He also offers a lower torque option if manual with standard clutch.

Just repeating what others have said here. I got my mk2 Cupra mapped with APR at an offer price of £480. Depends on how patient you are, but maybe wait till one of the big brands have a sale or offer time?

Go with what you want at the.end of the day. Think it boils down to the dealer your going to.

Pete at demon performance ex head technician of awesome gti years of experience brilliant guy always one of the first in the country to max out his personal Focus RS when ever a new one comes out.

Just had my seat in for a Drive train and LSD replacement never logged a TD1 having the work carried out now. Cars had the file on it from 800miles
