In April 07 my turbo gave up the ghost on my Bora TDI 150, I only had the car 2 months and already had it remapped by Chipped. I had plans later in the year to fit an upgraded turbo in the search for more power, so this was an early opportunity to buy myself an upgraded turbo.

I did as much research as I could online and spoke to countless Turbo hybrid experts. The choice was narrowed down to an Allard VT2 or VT4 or a Turbo Dynamics Stage 2 Hybrid. I wanted to retain low end diesel shove with minimal turbo lag while gaining as much power at high RPM's as possible and obviously price, the cheaper the better :) With a great deal from Turbo Dynamics the turbo was ordered.

The turbo was on and I took it easy for a few miles to bed it in, the car was still running a Stage 1 Map and straight away you could notice the extra high end RPM pull and the addictive turbo whistle. After again speaking to various tuners and online forums, I decided to buy a Milltek down pipe and straight through exhaust to allow the exhaust gases to flow at the Higher RPM's in turn allowing more boost past the typical fall away at 4000 RPM.

A few months passed as I was busy at work and had no time to fit in a remap for the turbo, but I had plenty of time to research and decide who to use. I set some targets, I was not all that bothered by Dyno figures, more the way it would perform on the road. Targets: 0-100 time of 15 seconds, 60-100 in 8.5 seconds, 40 + MPG and a map that allowed the car to drive as petrol like as possible i.e holding power and boost to the 4700 Red line, all in a Humble Bora weighing 1442kg

I decided that I wanted Joe @ Chippedire www.chippedire.com to map my car as he was more then helpful in answering all my questions and took time to explain what was possible and listened to what I wanted in my map. Also he had more then enough experience in TDI tuning and had many past happy customers who had this same Turbo setup.

The mapping process took a few days of trying various different maps. I noticed after the first couple of maps, that the ECU needed to sleep "literally over night" for the true performance and specifics of the map to show. The first couple of maps were very different from one another, one was very smoke free, no spool up smoke, no top end smoke, if anything you would never know this was a diesel car. Top end power between 4000-4500 was awesome with no discernable drop of in power, a total transformation from the original Stage 1 map. The other was a very high powered map but the smoke output in my opinion was to much for road use, I had previously read on some forums that recent Stage 2 TDI tune's by other companies were causing huge smoke trails and the rear of the car needed cleaning every other day. I did not want that ! The smoker map however did produce more noticeable low/mid range torque which was something I wanted as a daily driver but with the high end power, I realised at this point with my car being so heavy, that I really wanted low/mid range torque, so the aim now was to give me this but with as little smoke as possible. If I still had my old light weight Ibiza then the No smoke map would have been more then adequate and plenty quick enough !

I understand very little on how a map is written or what information they use, but Joe would use the information I provided him with to adjust the file as per my requirements. One issue I had was with Throttle load position, after a few TDI 130's with previous maps I wanted to make sure I got this perfect, I did not want half throttle inputs to feel as quick as full throttle inputs.

At the end, I got what I had wanted all along, My car literally pulls like a train, it's immense there is no let off all way upto and passed 4700 RPM, the smoke whilst present is more then acceptable for road use in my opinion (no harm in making sure everyone knows it's a diesel)

Performance Figures: All taken with 1/4 tank of fuel, same stretch of Private road, stop watched, Outside temp 12-15 Degrees.

Standard: 0-100 19.9
60-100 11.8
30-70 7.4

Stage 1: 0-100 16.8
60-100 9.7
30-70 5.5

Stage 2: 0-100 14.8
60-100 8.1
30-70 4.9

Stage 2: IC Pipe Fixed :) & 9.5 Degrees outside.
0-100 13.97
60-100 7.63

In conclusion I'm over the moon, I have got what I wanted a fast car that is cheap to run, cheap to tax and uses very little fuel. Joe's experience and expertise was key and without his work I doubt I would have reached my original targets.

I have had a lot of e-mails asking how I got my car mapped with Chippedire.com being in Ireland and myself being in Surrey. Well Joe use's/sales a hand held programmer device like that sold by Superchips as there bluefin product. It seems to be very common across Europe and especially in the U.S.A for customers wanting to remap there car to purchase hand held devices like these and receive maps via e-mails, but I am sure it will soon be as popular in the U.K.

In my opinion it becomes a true custom map as you are able to test it on the road under your personal driving characteristics then report back and wait for a new map if so required. Don't get me wrong I am not saying going to a specialists place of work and getting it mapped by them then putting it on a dyno is not a great thing, but in my experience you can travel miles to get a remap which shows great high figures on the dyno then on the road a few days later it needs tweaking and the last thing you want to do is travel another few hundred miles or less to tweak the map then only to find out it still is not as perfect as you require.

The handheld device allows 3 maps and a Valet mode. It is a plug and play system and only needs to be plugged into your PC/Laptop to received files then in to your car's diagnostic port. I am useless with anything under the bonnet or anything really technical yet it took me only a few minutes to get it up and running.
