Self cancelling indicators?

I posted this in another thread but starting a new one in case people miss it.

I picked up my new Leon this afternoon, I noticed on the drive home that the indicators don't self-cancel after turning a corner, is this a fault or a feature?

Great start :(

Haha. Sorry I should have sugar-coated that a bit.

It won't be expensive. It'll probably just be a simple repair on the stalk. Or replacement. Cheap cheap.

Can't you claim this from the place you got it from though? Surely this was broken before you got it?

The car is brand spanking new so it'll be getting done under warranty. Pain in the arse though. I just wanted to check it's not meant to be like that before I take it back.

If you haven't alreadyI would go somewhere safe (supermarket car park?), indicate and the turn on full lock, then turn back and see if it works. If it doesn't obviously something wrong, but I have noticed in this and other cars, sometimes a shallow turn doesn't return the stalk.

In my MR2 the two sides are different, that's been classed as a feature!!

You sure this isnt the "lane change" thing they have on the indicators ? Mine caught me out for a while...

Tap the stalk one way or the other and the indicators flash 3 times.... I thought mine were on all the time, you move the stalk in the other direction and invoke another cycle !

Mine is exactly the same, work sometimes and not others. Had the car 5 months but not going to take the car back just for that.

I have however found a fix that works albeit only for a couple of weeks. Park up and turn LH indicator on, turn steering to full left lock, turn back to center, indicators will cancel. Do the same for the RH indicator i.e. full turn to right etc.

After that the self cancelling works fine but as I say its not permanent. Its just easier than driving to the dealer.

Suppose it helps that one of my cars does not have self cancelling indicators thus I am used to turning them off.

I've been driving round roundabouts on the way home tonight to see if mine did this - they cancel fine, so far...

Generally you'll have a little sticky-out bit on the steering wheel end of the indicator switch. The sticky out bit gets clicked by a lug-thing on the steering column when you straighten the wheel out, in order to cancel the indicator and flick the stalk back to the neutral position.

One thing I noticed in the Leon is that the 'click' that you would normally hear when going onto full lock with the indicator activated is VERY quiet (say, indicating right and turning right), which would make me think that the action of the sticky-out bit versus the action of the lug thing is extremely soft - perhaps too soft.

Either the indicator stalk AND wiper stalk will need to be changed, or just the indicator switch. Sometimes the indicator stalk and wiper stalk come as one unit and sit over the top of the steering column in a horseshoe shape, other times they are seperate little boxes that screw in individually.

I had one go in my old Ibiza, and it was a 20 minute fix. Annoying nonetheless though!

On a side note, I am glad we don't have the Vauxhall type stalks, which are always in the horizontal position. I once did a 7 mile journey and was indicating left and right the entire way trying to make the things stop flashing

I've had a mess about in a car park and it's definitely an intermittent issue. It's booked in to be looked at next Tuesday so hopefully it'll be sorted.

On a side note, I just changed from a corsa and I actually liked the way the indicators worked on it! Each to their own I suppose.

I took the car into the dealer to get the indicators and a dashboard rattle looked at this morning.

The receptionist mentioned there's some new software update that was released by SEAT at the end of last week so they're going to apply to the car too while it's in today. She had no idea what it's for but I though you might want to know. If anyone does know what it fixes please let us know!
