ok i have a small list...

1. for the past 3 days ive been getting loud knocks when driving really slowly and turning the steering.

2. ive been getting what i would call clutch "drag". when i change gear the engine revs seem to drop down by 500rpm when clutch is engaged into another gear as if its slipping but only for a second after changing gear. if i boot the car from low revs it doesnt slip

3. been getting very low mpg. 32/33 mpg on motorway but 28/29 round town??

4. have an oil leak from breather pipe/ cam cover seal but i cant fix it. think i need a new one

the knocking noise has gone now  i have a feeling the slip or "drag" could be stretched clutch cable.

you're a mechanic, right?
so why the worry?

Why would a mechanic be asking these questions

as said, thats a common sign of CV joint being faulty

are the revs dropping when the clutch is pressed? Or not pressed?

This could be a few things. AFM, Lambda sensor, air/fuel filters, FPR, ECU, timing etc..

3. Hate to state the obvious, but try taking your foot off the accelerator once in a while ;) I'm guessing you've checked filters etc, it's not something elementary blocking access from air/fuel sides? No power drop etc?

Edit: Oooh, Lambda. Good idea :p

thats whats baffling me, cos its actually slipping now but only at 2500rpm in 1st, 2nd and 3rd gears when accelerating normally, i boot it and it doesnt slip. i have driven many, many cars with clutches on the way out but ive never come across this before. such thing as a warped clutch/flywheel?

Definition: Drag
Clutch drag occurs when the disc attached to the clutch pedal continues to spin even after the clutch has been released.
Symptoms:
Clutch drag is usually recognized by difficulty shifting gears. This may or may not be associated with a grinding sound.
Causes:
Causes of clutch drag vary depending on clutch type. Generally, some common causes are problems with binding cables, pedal brackets and the master or slave cylinders.

i know my pedal box has snapped, and since its a cable clutch its either the pedal box or cable right? just need a second opinion before i spend any more money.
