Can anyone help me locate the type of plugs needed for 170 V5 and also the cheapest place to buy some?
Cheers

The platinum ones aren't bendy like copper and you can damage the plug. I'd just accept the fact that the gap is preset. NGK are usually pretty good at that sort of thing!

Yeah, what he said. I ordered some PZFR5D-11 last night, a dude on ebay selling 4 for £20, so I had to get another single, so all up, 5 plugs for less than £30 delivered, and dispatched today, well good. I'll be trusting the gap is what it says on the tin and dropping them straight in.

I did that last time, they're also used by one of the smaller VW's and for some reason a set of 4 and then another 1 works out cheaper than 5!!

not sure, but might be suggested to change at 60k, but that depends on I guess on if the car is running rich or overheated. I don't know when mine were last replaced as the history that came with it is only a copy of the dealers service book, no specifics as to the type of server. They might be ok, but its only £30 for 5, so thought I would do them anyway, then I atleast know they are done.

I change mine every 10k service, along with filters and oil. It's more out of habit than anything, everyone I speak to say that it's overkill.

Urgent! Urgent!

Having a bit of a mare. Just took my plugs out, to pop in the NGK PZFR5D-11's that everyone said they used. NGK BKR5EKUP have come out, which I think are for the VR6. The PZFR5D-11's are about 5mm longer. Very confused.

The NGK plug guide that Mowgli linked to in post 2 says that the BKR5EKUP plugs are for the 150 BHp V5. The original poster in this thread was after plugs for a 170 BHp V5, for which PZFR5D-11 is correct according to NGK.

Which engine do you have?

Hello, Mines the 170, as checked via engine number, the presence of 5 seperate coil packs, and the power figuare on the V5c doc. Looks like I've been running with the wrong plugs. I wonder for how long? The BKR5EKUP's that came out were pretty black, but not badly burnt, or pitted. Even though I am confident that this is the case, when I first fire it up with the new plugs, I will be very nervous, and watching for 5 spark plug shaped dents to appear on my bonnet.

Not the easiest service in the world today. Auto Performance Online, supplied a service kit for a 1.9 TDI, so my V5 170 is now sitting over an inspection pit with no oil in it. Off to get a GENUINE V5 oil filter in the morning. The Tdi one is rather longer and thinner than the V5's cartridge.

That wouldn't be the first time that's happened. The first service I did I got given a long and thin filter, wouldn't even go in the hole. The 170 filter cartridge is short and dumpy, with a plastic spike sticking out the middle. This is what it should look like;

It should fit nicely into the canister cap, then the whole unit screws into the car. If it doesn't fit snug on the cap, it's the wrong one.

With regards to the spark plugs, check the engine threads if possible. With a shorter spark plug you would have had the end of the threads making up part of the combustion chamber, and it's possible they would have got damaged or at the very least been sooted up. At least it wasn't the other way round, if the previous owner had put in plugs that were 5mm longer then you'd have had 5 plug shaped dents in the pistons! :)

It's now got 4 ltr, of Castrol Edge 5w 30 swililng around inside, the right filters, and 5 shiney new plugs. I would be kidding you lot on if I said myself and the guy doing the service for me, weren't rather nervous when we fired her up after popping the plugs in. Very happy to say my bonnet and pistons have avoided spark plug shaped dents.

She's running a treat too. Sooo much smoother, with no warm up wobbles (I noticed that judder some have talked about around 2-3k rpm the other day), tick over is much improved, and she just pulls and pulls.

In other news, I helped a friend test drive a brand new Citroen DS3 today. Cool looking for sure, but utterly gutless for a 100bhp supermini, horrid steering, really cheap inside. I enjoyed the drive home in the Tolly much much more. Better steering, better build quality, much more go. All for less than 33% of the down payment my flatmate will have to pay for the DS. Today I feel a little smug.

That's the great thing about the Tolly, it's always great to fire it up and drive after a while away from it. Even after 108k spirited miles :cool:
