hi

i have a 03 LCR and my speedo sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. i fitted a aftermarket head unit the other day and its started playing up about a day or 2 after fitting it. I thought maybe for some strange reason it was messing with the electrics so took it out but still no difference, the fuel gauge also plays up but temp and revs seem to work perfectly.

At first i thought it could be a sender but whats the chances of 2 going at the same time? my second thought was is it to do with the cluster at the back of the dash?

any one got any ideas on what it is or how to fix it?

thanks robaidh.

When you say the fuel gauge plays up, what exactly do you mean? Do you have any pictures?
If you have vcds you can do a full dashboard test

it hasnt played up since the first time it happened the fuel was low though, the gauge was fluctuating and the low level beep was going off then stop then on again so filled it to the brim. only thing is that when the speedo isnt working the mpg instat and avrage and miles left in tank on the digital lcd screen dont work. that make sence?

what is VCDS?

thanks

Yeah if you remove the dash cluster and ensure all the wires in the back are plugged in firmly thats probably a good step.
If you lower the steering wheel and pull it as close as you can and see theres a cover above it, a long strip. Pull it off, 2 screws behind hold the dash in place, remove them and it'll pop right out.

VCDS is VagCom Diagnostic Software made by RossTech. Its a cable that plugs into your car and laptop and diagnoses problems, tells you all you can know about whats not working in your car. Can also be used to modify the ecu setiings ie, cruise control, siren sounds, auto central locking etc.

Okay thanks man. I have been to see a friend that has vag com he was at work but he said bring car over tonight and he will plug it in. in the mean time i have removed the dials and all plugs seem to be plugged in fine so i have put it all back together. and will have to wait untill tonight, my local parts store recons it could be the abs sensor?

I think the MK4 platform still has a speedo sensor plugged into the diff housing on the gearbox. More modern cars calculate it from the ABS sensors. If it's genuinely intermittent, check the connection to it (may need to remove the airbox for access). I once soaked the connector on a mk1 focus speed sensor in WD40 and that cleared an intermittent connection problem.
