I'm considering having an R Tech Stage 1 remap put on my Leon FR facelift but have been told by my current insurer's that they will not insure the car with this modification. So I either get the remap and dont inform my insurance company or look for another insurer/ leave it as standard. What did other upgraders do with regard to their insurance?

Wait till you can find one that will insure you.

If you don't and just get one and don't declare if you crash you get nothing and worst case scenario you hurt someone your insurance won't pay out and you will be taken to court and forced to pay medical bills ect

IMO it's not worth not declaring

never known an assessor to check the ecu of a car to see if it's remapped. no way for them to really find out

Just because you've never known it, doesn't mean it doesn't or can't happen

Either change insurers or wait until your current term expires before trying one of the specialist insurers

What engine is in the FL FR? R-Tech do a map for the CR diesel but don't touch the TSI engines with the MED17 ECU at the moment.

Wait until renewal or change insurance company to one that'll insure it.

It added all of about £30 to my insurance, not worth the risk, is it?

Insurance companies are getting wiser to after market remaps apparently and some have the ability to check a car's ecu if they feel inclined to. I was told this by a revo technician a few years ago.

Find a specialist insurer (of which there are many) and then declare your intentions then get the remap.

Simply not worth risking anything over a simple stage 1 remap.

Always declare everything, not worth having your insurance cancelled through a failure to declare. When is the renewal due, it may be worth waiting until you renew.

Yeah just wait until you're insurance is up for renewal and then you can shop around that's what I did. Saying that I've just renewed my insurance to including a remap (which is being done next week) last years company was actually the cheapest!

greenlight and adrian flux are mod friendly

Agreed, they are and my friend insures with remapped Golf GTi through them.

Don't forgot to check the comparison sites too though. They all now allow you to get instant quotes with a remap, found it really good to find a decent quote with some of the large insurance companies and without having to call up.

Admiral beat Adrian Flux and Greenlight for me but I am old! It seems they are better for the younger set. Declared my springs, induction and a BHP increase of between 11-25% and it wasn't much money. I cannot advise you strongly enough not to not declare ANY modifications.

Chris Knotts is my insurer they are spot on. Also they have no problems insuring modified cars.
Like others have said you do need to declare it. If you had an accident weather it's your fault or another driver and the insurance company(s) find non declared mods you are screwed.
They will try everything to ensure no payout for a claim!

Same here although not tried Flux yet.
Did you have a massive ballache when you spoke to Admiral about your mods? I did, I nearly jumped out the window it was that bad! The approx hour long convo went from an initial flat out NO to remap but yes to a chip, to me asking them why a 'chip' was ok but a remap not ok, much to-ing and fro-ing by our non-native call handler between me busting his chops and his supervisor until finally he came back and it was ok and would cost a small amount.

Admiral renewal (with filter and S1 declared @ +25%) is 80 sheets less than Greenlight. The guy there was a bit shocked. Only advantage with GL was my mods are insured like for like, whereas Admiral they are not.

Adrian Flux charged me an extra 20% pro-rata for my stage one remap on a TDI PD140, remapped to about 185bhp (£75ish). I thought this was quite expensive to be honest.

Just been playing around online and i am amazed.

My Admiral renewal is £440 fully comp, protected NCB with mods declared.
Greenlight came back with £520, and doing a confused search the cheapest coming up is Elephant (yes Admirals sister) asking for £535.

Out of curiosity I do a confused search with NO mods and quite a few companies can insure me for under £200, and the Elephant quote is reduced by £200.

Fook me, I think they just make this **** up as they go along. I'm 37 with 15 years NCB do about 5k in the car a year, I don't use it for commuting and its locked up out of sight in my back yard pretty much all the time yet im being stung approx 200 green queens for my mods. Think I might actually get rid of the map and filter.

Ring a specialist insurer. Silly not to on a nodded car. Sky insured my stage 2 mapped/modded Leon with my other half as a named driver for a very reasonable fee, even though she had only had her licence for 18 months.
