steering angle g85 sensor help please

hi,

im looking for some help with a steering angle issue. bear with me:

Leon cupra, 2000 with ESP.

traction/ESP light came up on dash, using my scanner the code was 00788
I could reset this using the scanner, and the light would go out. but then come on within a few seconds - a minute of driving.

Got a garage to try and check the calibrating / alignment, they seemed to know what they were doing but they said it would not allow them to calibrate it and that the steering angle sensor needs replacing. - not a cheap job.

So i got a second hand sensor from another leon cupra and fitted it myself.i took care to ensure steering wheel was taken off and replace with correct alignment, sensor was set correctly when fitted, and all wiring plugged in as the original.
This time however the fault was permanent and i could not reset it with the scanner.

To be sure to be sure i then borrowed another sensor of a mate who has an LCR.
fitted this and the same thing happens, permanent fault which does not reset. at all.

My question is, if you change the sensor will this have a permanent fault that doesnt reset until you do a calibration/set up? i was expecting that i may need to calibrate it, but i dont understand why the light is on permanently and doesnt clear.

is this normal or have i managed to snag a wire or something?

and if anyone has vagcom in the hertfordshire area and willing to help i will happily supply beers as a reward.

thanks in advance!

I may be wrong but things like this are potentially coded to the car and probably won't work on another car

You could try calibration but I expect you will need a new sensor but try calibration first

sadly i only have a cheap basic scanner so its just the 5 digit code.
Although it does appear capable of registering two different codes using same number.

i will probably put the original sensor back on, if this allows me to rest the fault, (but still faulty once i drive) then this probably suggests a new sensor needs matching or setting up.
Although i don't really understand why that would be.

You will need to code the G85 sensor to the vehicle before you can calibrate it.

Typically they do not need to be coded online fitting the old one back to the vehicle pulling the hex keys from the old one then install the new one and manually recode it, then you can carry out the calibration procedure.

Typically the G85 calibration requires a full lock to the left full lock to the right drive ahead to 30km/h with the wheel straight come to a stop and the K185 light should reset. ( This is the procedure when using ODIS via the test plan) I would suspect it will not calibrate without using ODIS or VCDS
