Sticking Wheels?

Hello,

Okay so i apologise in advance for my lacking car knowledge, but i'm looking for a bit of advice.

I have recently purchased a 2009 Seat Ibiza SE and seem to be experiencing what feels like the back wheels sticking.

So i start my engine on a morning, first gear and release the handbrake for about 10 seconds the car feels stuck, i rev and get nothing until all of a sudden the car clunks and jolts into action. I have no problem with the same thing throughout the day, drives perfectly.

However i do get a really bad creak when i release my footbrake sometimes and also when i park on an incline, after stopping the engine with the handbrake on i get again a sort of creak.

Has anyone else had anything like this or has any idea what could be wrong?

I already have it booked in at the garage on Friday morning to fix a leak from the tube linking to my back window washers, apparently the whole dashboard has to be removed. Yet this is being replaced for free as i have only had the car approximately two months.

Any advice or suggestions?

Thanks Emma

Emma, assuming your car has disk brakes at the rear I don't think you have a problem. It is common for the brake pads to stick to the disk when the car is left parked overnight, the clunk you feel is the pads breaking away from the disk. As for the creaking, mine does that I just ignore it now.

I had this exact same problem on my 1.4 Sport. It's got drums at the back and after leaving it for 6 days while I was on holiday, it completely stuck, and I had to rev so hard to release it that it left skid marks on my drive from when it released. The whole back and was raised about an extra 6 inches maybe even more while I was revving to release the brakes.

I took it to the dealer and they cleaned out the rear drums (tried to charge me £35 but got it for free in the end). After that it was much better but it still does it if it's very cold or if it's left for longer than a couple of days but not as bad as where I described above. My car went in for investigation last week for another problem and they cleaned out the rear drums again but it still sticks if left for a longer period of time. I was at the dealer once again this morning to have radiatior and valve replaced and the guy asked me how the brakes were but when I said it's still not 100% he didn't really say much.

As mentioned, drums can be as bad as discs. I'm finding it particularly bad in the current mixed conditions, a bit of water makes things very gunky. My car hadn't been driven since Friday, and the noise it was making this morning was awful!

Some pad compounds can be worse than others, so perhaps next time you have a pad/shoe change it might be worth going for another brand.

Hi guys,

I have a 1.4 SC with drums on the rear and I have recently had the same issue as Emma.
Last week after heavy rain I released the handbrake and the car was stuck, I revved several times and managed to 'free' the car but the ABS light came on.
The car has gotten stuck a couple of times since but no where near as bad, it seems to happen after rainfall.

A pain really as I've only had the car 2 months and has been problem free otherwise. I have my service and MOT due in Aug so will make sure this gets a look at.

Glad it seems to be a known problem too.
