Stiff Boot Lid

Just bought a Toledo (changed from a Leon). I love the car, it's amazing, way better than the Leon from a driver perspective. The boot lid however is really tight. Is this the gas lifters? I can honestly leave it about 5 inches from closed and it will just stay there,normally they should fall closed. Also I have to slam it really hard to get it to close and catch. Any ideas what this could be? Loathed to go spend £35-£40 on gas lifters if it doesn't fix it.

My lifters had pretty much failed, I had to get them replaced. A shop in Derby does aftermarket lifters for a decent price, now it goes up and down smoothly. It still won't fall closed though, if I let it drop it will drop slow enough to not catch. I don't have to slam it though.

Greasing my hinge had no effect, and as soon as I removed the lifters it demonstrated how 'limp' the hinges are so I was sure it wasn't the hinges.

This is where I got them from;

Cheers Slimy, I'll check the hinges by taking off the old struts and seeing how easy the bootlid moves. If it is nice and loose I'll get some new gas lifters.

I'd try lubricating the hinge points first, with one of those "PTFE" oils like 3-in-one High Performance Lubricant. That freed mine up a lot, although it won't fall shut. That's due to the hinge geometry.

Muttley is spot on there..

Give all the hinges on my Toledo a spraying with PTFE fluid about twice a year and everything is fine - the boot will close in one movement but don't expect it to drop like (for eg) a hatchback lid.
