I was bored the other day, so decided to remove my back seats and spare wheel to see if i noticed a difference in weight.... and i did tbh it feels alot lighter in the corners and picks up speed easier has anyone else done this ?
Yep, about 7 years ago I did this to a previous car...
That was for track day use. Very noticeable difference - 0-60 for example fell from 9.1s to 7.86s and the 1/4 mile down to 16.08.
One word of warning, taking lots of weight out of the back makes the car a lot more prone to lift-off oversteer. My Ibiza was a right handful - I relocated the battery to the boot to try to help but it was still very twitchy.
Well that makes my attempt of stripping out look poor lol. That really is stripped!! Not surprised it was quicker for u mate lol, bet that was a quality track car though!
Yeah, it was a lot of fun out on track. The Cordy I now have has also been on a diet although not quite so radical - it still has a dashboard
Not sure if a strutbrace will help you much. Spacers help a bit to widen the rear track, as does a better anti-rollbar, but ultimately it's a design feature of the car to be slightly tail happy and taking all the wait off the back accentuates it. The Cordy is a little better thanks to the extra bodywork hanging over the back. They did used to say that the Jetta was a better handling car than the Mk2 Golf for the same reason.
Lift off oversteer is fun if you're used to it - which I am now. However one of my funniest moments in the Ibiza was when I let a mate drive it at Combe. He was following a Civic round Camp corner, Civic had a moment so my mate lifted off slightly to avoid hitting him and next thing we were spinning and ended up going over the start/finish line backwards. I was laughing my head off - he nearly sh*t himself.
I had to put them back in the other night because I was picking people up lol. I can tell the difference now there back in tbh. Not massively but just feels that little bit heavier again.
I'd leave the interior in and fit beefed up anti roll bars and spacers. Will allow you to do the corners quicker and still have a comfortable car instead of a rattle can
