The Heat Shield Under Bonnet Necessary?

Hi guys,

I have a really annoying problem that I hope you could help me with. I live on a farm and recently we've been getting a lot of rats that have decided to live in my engine bay!

They're living in-between the heat shield attached to the bonnet (I'm guessing it is a heat shield). My question is as the title states, is the heat shield necessary? Am I able to remove it without any consequences? Also how much is a new one? As they've chewed through the current one.

Thanks in advance.

I removed mine and has been removed for 6 months, no problems just the fact it's not painted lol

It's for soundproofing and isn't particularly important since they forgot to soundproof the doors, boot, etc...

Its not a heat shield lol. As said its a form of sound proofing, its also only held in by plastic pop clips. Reason is what its supposed to do is if you ever get some sort of engine bay fire they melt, the blanket drops and wraps around in hope it puts it out. I had an audi that I pulled it out of... not because rats had eaten it, but because id put a nice sounding dump valve in and wanted to hear it more lol
