Tsi or tdi

Looking to invest in my first leon hatch. I'm struggling to choose between petrol or diesel as I need the engine to tick many boxes. Firstly I want a family car but secondly I'm training up to become a part time driving instructor. I will be teaching lessons but also want to teach trailer towing tuition also. I'm anticipating 15-20k miles per year. The trailer I will need to tow will weigh 1200kg. Half of the above miles will be towing. According to the specs the 1.4/1.5 tsi will pull 1700kg and the 2.0tdi will pull 1800kg. I'd like to move away from diesels but what is everyone's thoughts on my needs and which engine to opt for. Also does anyone have a tow bar on the fr spec and know the height of the ball? I need to know if it will match up with my trailer as the suspension is slightly lower than on other spec Leon's. Many thanks.

Hello there,

I've found this thread below of owners opinions comparing the 1.4 and 1.5 TSI, there's some really good info about both engine's in the MK3 Leon.

And another thread below discussing the 2.0 TDi

Hope this helps

The tsi when trailing drinks double vs diesel it makes very little difference in consumption.
engine reliability we all know diesel has a lot better when dealing with weight.
then it comes values 100k diesel still have good value, 100k tsi there this hummm blowing expectancy and others.
1.4TSI 150 vs 2.0 TDI 150, I would take diesel without blink eyes.

Both TSI and TDI have their merits but as soon as you mentioned towing for me TDI has to be the choice, especially at 15-20k per year.
I wouldn't dream of towing anywhere near those towing limits though!
Don't know how they rate those small/light petrol's at 1700kg!
I suspect your 1200kg trailer would be around the kerb weight of the TSI - so 100% match wouldn't be great for a learner either!
TDI is more like 1380kg.

Towing, 15-20k and 100k miles

The only solution is a diesel, TSI doesn’t have the torque.

Most learner driver cars are diesel too, well mine was, diesels tend to have a heavier clutch pedal and better feel so are easier for learners. Then again the manual driving license will soon become a thing of the past when in 2030 new cars can only be electric (all auto’s), so the need for a manual license going forward will start to diminish.

How are the more modern VAG gearboxes with regards to their earlier nasty habits?

Suicidal crownwheel rivet heads that fall off, that then destroy the gearbox.
The roll pin that lets go of the spider gear pin, which then destroys the gearbox.
The exploding spider gears that then destroy the gearbox.

Can you see a common theme here?

Maybe it's luck, but how have others found these for heavy towing?
