Hi Guys,

Looking for advice on tyres as I know there have been a number of posts about them. I am going to be replacing all four tyres soon on my Mk3 Leon FR 150tsi and am thinking about Good Year Asymmetrics for 18" alloys. Is this a good all round tyre with good grip? Or would anyone recommend me look at anything else? Please advise.

Also, I think its high time I got set up with a front Dash Cam and I would like recommendations on what people are happy with, and the quality of the cam. Ability to put in a decent size card would be good and I would want it hard wired in so where do I get that done? I'm in Derbyshire, so any help is appreciated. I know there is Halfords but not sure on the quality of these people.

Can't advise on tyres, but I can comment on cameras.

I'm using an actioncam at the moment, think gopro knockoff.

An SJCam SJ7 Star.

I've been very happy with it so far (couple of weeks use) and I can also use it for other stuff (eg I mounted it on paintball gun last time I played).

Uploaded a few videos from it in YouTube if you're interested.

Of course for the flexibility of using it elsewhere I've not perm wired it in. I've a long cable running from power out by handbrake, under driver seat and up to dash behind the trim.

Look on the techmoan website. This guy has been testing dashcams for years and knows his stuff. I bought a Viofo A119 based on his recommendations - and he was right.

Something else!

If you buy a dashcam, try using Datakam viewer. It finds and lists your dashcam files when you open it. You can go full screen by double-clicking the image and zoom using the scroll wheel on a mouse. You can also pause the video and take a jpeg.

And it's free.

I use a nextbase 212 and have issues with it. Sound recordings aren't the best but it's for the footage anyway. Good budget price camera and easy to hardwire in with the nextbase hardware kit too, took me 30 mins tops. Canera comes with suction cup mount with magnetic holder for camera that hardwire kit plugs into making the camera quick and easy to remove.

Tyres are such a subjective thing. What 1 person likes another may hate.

For me personally I like the following:

All round grip: Continental sport contact 5p
Dry grip : Michelin pilot sport cup
wet grip : Uniroyal rainsport

Why??

I've tried loads of tyres over the years from Federal 595rs-r road legal track day tyres to Vredestein to Toto. I find the Continental to be the best all rounder as they have great dry grip , great wet grip & good feedback . I'd say their only downside is slightly higher tyre roar.

Michelin pilot sport cup 2 speak for themselves in the dry but can be lethal in the wet and wear quickly.

Uniroyal rainsport I tried after my friend started running them as his wet control tyre when competing in the UK time attack championship . Wet grip and feedback is outstanding but can suffer tread shuffle if pushed hard in the dry.

Just my 2 cents.

This month's Evo has their 2017 tyre test.

Michelin PS4s the hands down winner.

I'd second the PS4S recommendation- changed to these from the OEM fit Bridgestones and they're quieter with so far at least, excellent all round performance. I did get nearly 20k miles out of the Bridgestones but not expecting that from the Michelins - time will tell.

As for dash cams I use a Transcend DrivePro 220 with a 64gb card in it. Has GPS which is great for giving accurate speed on the video playback as well as grid position. Had it for 3 years now and been faultless plus nice compact design means it tucks behind the rear view mirror nicely. I haven't hard wired it (yet...)

I have been running a lukas qvia for the last 6 months with no issues other than dodgy sd card. It has no screen so is small and discreet enough to live out of driver and passenger view behind the rear view mirror with cable routed into headlining and down to fuse box. The camera comes with parking mode, gps and WiFi for set up /configuration. Running 64gb U3 card after SanDisk class 10 developed issues after a couple of months.

Thanks for all responses so far. Re Dash cam, have been looking at Nextbase Duo and wondered if anyone has this fitted and/or opinions on it. New to all this dash cam stuff so want to buy a good one. The idea of front and back simultaneously recorded sounds very good. It seems to tick all the boxes. Again, advice is appreciated. Am looking at the recommendations of people also. Cheers :)
