Has anyone upgraded the very early 6 button MIB to a newer one with satnav etc ? Software version is 147 !!
It's on my 2013 Mk3 and doesn't have satnav or DAB and the software is nowhere near as capable as the newer versions. Are there any issues with a straight swap out ?
I think you might have issues upgrading to a new one due to wiring locations and general cost of newer units. The sat nav ones (MIB1/2) have the main "brains" in the glove box and I think you will not have this. You would also of course require the antennas for GPS and DAB. Might get quite expensive. Aftermarket may well be the way to go (provided you don't lose too many features) as I'm not sure how much can be set via the unit you have.
Thanks for the response az. It looks like I can pick up the screen and control/SD unit for £100-200 and a GPS antenna is about £10-20. So that wouldn't be too bad. Not too keen on aftermarket ... would rather keep to Seat kit if possible But I guess it also depends on wiring compatibility and recoding the unit for my car. I'll have a scan around the forum and see if anyone has any experience of this.
Upgrading to a newer unit is very difficult/maybe impossible.
Your current headunit is all one assembly, where as the newer ones have just the screen and the rest is in the glovebox.
You'd need to make space in the glove box, rewire behind the dash and also do a lot of coding.
Honestly if you want to upgrade, an xtrons unit would be a good choice.
Yeah I'm not sure it's possible. Have the screen and unit you are looking at had Component protection removed? Assuming you can repute wiring ext that could work. Best way to do it might be to get a loom from a breaker maybe. But I'm not sure its worth the hassle. Could look at the Alpine OEM+ unit. But they are pricy. Think they retain car integration and loom In in the screen area and have carplat sat nav dab ect

Thanks everyone for the replies and info. It looks like quite a tall order. I may just shelve it and put the money towards a Cupra 300 !
As a major S|EAT fan I have to say that I bought the FR after running a mk1 Leon for several years which itself was a little cracker, but the FR is totally brilliant. Just sailed through the MOT, no advisories. Goes like a dream. In my opinion the perfect blend of performance, styling, economy and reliability.
I have an mib1 unit and screen etc if you want it out of a 15 plate FR. I upgraded to MIB2 but you could have the lot for £50 if you wanted it. It’s the sat nav unit from a tech pack car.
Going from MIB1 all in one to MIB2 DAB+ Sat nav is not piece of cake but it is not and rocket science
It worth to me around 400 pounds together with Seat Sound retrofit.
