Vtec?

After talking to a friend of mine who knows a lot about cars, he was explaining to me that when Honda fit vtec is basically like having a small turbo, that's why they make big power from small engines. So we was talking and vtec turbos make huge power, so why not fit a Vtec to a 1.8t engine? I don't know much about them tbh, but my friend seems to know his stuff, so has anyone tried fitting a Vtec to their car? And how easy would it be to do?

the lc and lcr already have vvt which is pretty much the same thing, only the leons use it in a different way to the hondas

I think your friend knows a little less about cars than you might think!! VTEC is nowt like a small turbo, it's still a naturally aspirated engine as opposed to forced. It delivers it's big numbers by being able to spin up much higher than most cars, and since BHP is a product of torque and revs it means they can sell more cars!

Correct me if I'm wrong but dosnt a vtec engine run on 8v in the lower rev range and the in the higher revs all 16v kick in, after being in a mates integra powered civic it has an affect of a instant jump of power once all 16v kick in

Ok, your corrected

This has been one of the best threads in ages. And I thought it was the Honda owners who were meant to be the dumb ones

lol, this thread is awesome, thumbs up to your mate! What a dude!! :D

VTEC is used to get more power at higher revs. When the engine gets to a certain RPM, it will activate a second set of cams in the engine causing the valves to open for longer, getting air in, and exhast out faster. That is why you get a 'kick' when it activates. VTEC Just kicked in yo!!!

The VVT on the 1.8t uses a hydraulic adjuster which makes the inlet valves open later and have a slight overlap with the exhaust to make the cat converter warm up faster to cut emissions. It is NOT a performance enhancement.

They are both variable valve timing, but aimed at completely different purposes. Toyota have something similar called VVT-i, but it is different again to VVT and VTEC.

when vtec kicks in it creates more lift which is why you get the big punch,
on our engines at work, its the same thing, you get vvt and variable valve lift, its done in a different way to vtec but much the same principle, rather than having a set of rockers, like i think vtec has, which are either engaged or disengaged to give you more lift etc, its controlled within the tappet. the cam is always in contact with the rocker or tappet, but due to lack of oil pressure or w/e the tappet/rocker cannot open the valve, so the out board lobes are used instead, providing less lift

our vvt is nothing like vtec or porsches "vario cam plus" etc

Vvt is nothing like vtec lol delete your comment sam you have made your self look like a plank lol

not really dan (flopbox):p they are both variable valve timing so cant be that different. honda use it for perfomance and the leon doesnt.

v-tech = lots of noise bit of speed top end

no torque what so ever hense why they never go bang
