hi all..

yet another problem.. i had my oil and filter changed at the weekend and was told that the propeller on my water pump had sheared off.. my reply was f*&^%*&%
i rang a garage to get a quote over the phone and was quoted £453! as they need to change the cambelt aswell because they may stretch if its taken off... even though i only had it changed in october 2010(baring in mind they havnt inspected the cambelt)
i rang a local auto parts dealer and can get the part for £53.64 new.

does this seem right? or are they just scamming money?

You can change the pump without changing the belt but the garage won't be able to guarantee that the belt won't go. so they are just covering there arses. To change the waterpump it should take about 3-4 hours

If you had the cambelt done in 2010, surely you got the water pump changed at the same time. (Virtually every cambelt post on here says get the water pump replaced at the same time as your cambelt)

If you had it bone a few months back then it should be covered under warranty?

The garage I use to have my cambelt replaced refuse to do the job unless you get the water pump done at the same time!

Seems unlikely that the propeller would shear off, how many miles has your car done?

take it awesome they doing deals on cambelt and waterpump at mo i think

I'm still driving it :/ it's been leaking coolant for the last couple of months but never could find the leak.. Never overheated once and still running smooth :$

If the impeller had sheered of the pump your temp gauge would shoot up to 120deg as soon as you drove because there's nothing to circulate the water through the Radiator.

To check if your waterpump is working ok:

● Take off the return pipe to your coolant expansion tank
● Start the engine and raise the engine revs slowly to around 3000rpm
● If you got a good flow of water it is not your pump
● If you don't get any water flow it is your pump is faulty
