CV joint or driveshaft would be more of a clicking noise, and you're more likely only to get that when turning not when driving straight! Wheel bearing is usually a drumming noise whislt driving along if its failed or failing, simular to an out of shape tyre! You say you've had the wheel off recently, try checking your brakes or heat sheild on the back of the disc, if you've caught that it could be rubbing on the disc and is usually made worse when turning one way. Worth a try dude!

Hi again

I did check the heat shield as I read on a vw forum this could cause the noise, thanks anyway

Anyway the garage have told me that the lower arm needs replacing, said they will show me what's wrong later buy said it will cost £120 inc everything, said it causes the wheel to move about to much.

Will find out more later and update

One of the ball joints in the wishbone was totally knackered, glad it's fixed and I have no more horrible grinding noise.
