Whining noise while accelerating

I've done a search of the forum but haven't been able to find anything specifically matching my problem.

A while back a whining noise developed while in 5th.
Since then it has spread to all of the gears.
The noise increases as the revs increase and decreases when I lift off.

The car is also quite noisy while stationary without the clutch engaged.

Any ideas what it might be?

could be a number of things but start by making sure the gearbox has oil and go from there
as for it being noisy when in neutral, thats normally down to the clutch release bearing but could be related to the other noises you have when driving in other gears its hard to say but get it looked at asap

agree with above, if it sounds like it was fitted to a 84 metro turbo then check the oil it probably has none in it :)

Didn't bring it to a garage yet.
Haven't been driving it either, so at least I'm not damaging it further.

Pardon my ignorance, but how do I check the gearbox for oil?
Had a look under the bonnet and couldn't spot anything there.

there will be a drain and a filler plug, drain being on the lower/underside of the gearbox.

Filler will be around halfway up the side maybe more. its usually recnoisable as it stands out as being the only big bolt in the area, or a large allen key. i did my G60 and the filler was on the front side of the box. but more than likely they are in different places on different box's

Haynes manual time i feel. just dont pull the plasticly cover off the top of the gearbox and poor it in there, thats the clutch/flywheel and u dont want oil on them!

Clutch bearing is causing it in neutral and the gearbox bearing is causing the noise while in gear. infamous VAG weak spot, my old 1.4 ibiza that i sold with 70k on the clock is still bombing around now with it whining 4 years on!

Changing the gear box oil can help, but ultimately you'll need new bearings in the box and a clutch (the bearing is part of it).

Checking the gear oil is the stupidist concept ever on cars!

I think there is a drain plug on the bottom of the gearbox for when you change oil, and this is the daft thing, there is a plug on the side somewhere which is the level the oil should be, you have to fill until the oil comes out of that one i believe to check it.

sounds like gear oil level to me, higher revs give the oil less chance to circulate hence more noise at high levels.

Well, ye were right.
The clutch bearing was causing the noise in neutral, while there wasn't enough oil in the gearbox.

Oil was an easy fix, but the mechanic reckoned the clutch bearing wasn't bad enough to be worth fixing on an Ibiza of its age/value.

Thanks for the help everyone.

glad you got it sorted and was only the oil level or you could have been in for a big bill
as for the clutch bearing, dont worry about it.wait until your clutch goes and get it done then, its not doing any damage and is pointless dropping the gearbox to do a clutch release bearing

Seems it isn't as sorted as I'd thought.
There seems to be a leak in the gearbox.

Never spotted it before yesterday.
Either I've been running it without oil for ages or it's a very small leak.
Assuming it's a hole from a stone or something I'm hoping the mechanic can weld it up.

Bringing it to him on Monday so I'll be finding out soon!

was going to say if it was a case of no oil, dont just fill it up again without finding the reason why its losing it in the first place.
id say its more than likely the gasket/seal where it meets the engine
if it is then you are going to have to drop the gearbox to fit a new gasket/seal.if thats the case, you might aswell do the clutch and release bearing at the same time
hopefully its not the above and is a easy fix though
