2nd gear "crunchy"

I on my 2009 140 TDI, I've found 2nd is always a bit crunchy even going up a gear & sometimes is difficult to get into gear although not impossible .........the car has only done 13000 miles so I am only slightly concerned about it...............plus I had this on my old 2001 TDI from about 40,000 miles & still was like it exactly the same when I sold it at 120,000 miles...............so I'm thinking it is a common occurrence. So does anyone else suffer with a difficult 2nd gear that has been going on for sometime ?

My Mk1 FR TDI (6-speed box) has a slightly obstructive / rough 2nd gear, especially when cold.

Maybe the synchromesh on 2nd is a bit weak, and it gets a lot of use around town so sees more wear and tear.

I just take it easy when cold and it's quite a lot better when the gearbox oil is warm.

ISTR there's a sticky on here somewhere for resetting the gearbox cables adjustment. Don't know if that applies to the Mk2 but it might be worth a try.

Ben, Thanks, thats a great description ! (slightly obstructive / rough 2nd gear). I find exactly as you say...take it easy until the oil warms up.........then it's OK..................infact with the recent warmer weather it's been OK from square one.
Just wanted to see if anyone else had experienced it........or that I was unlucky enough to have had two TDI's like it

I have a 01 audi a6 1.8t 90000 miles, don't know the gearbox code, that was stubborn to get into 2nd gear on the up change and slightly less awkward on the way down. It was not too bad when warm. I got the gearbox oil changed and this sorted it no end. The gearbox specialist said that the syncromesh mechanism for 2nd gear is very fine and it has a coating of it that once it wears off then the box just won't select 2nd and the box will have to be stripped to replace it.

Might be a case of 'they're all like that sir'

Does anyone else has the same issue?

Does anyone else experience this ?...............with mine now that the average ambient temperature has gone up the problem lasts for much less time on warm up. Could it be the oil is wrong for our temperatures and viscosity a bit think...............still would be good to know others experiences or thoughts.

Since we've had the good weather the 2nd gear has been "as good as gold" so I wondered if the viscosity of the oil was not suitable for our Winter/Autumn ? or I was wondering the old guy who had it before me only averaged 3K per year ! So I wondered if the "poodling around" by him might of not loosened it up enough from new ? and since I've been using it a bit more aggressively had finally loosened it up as it should be ?.....................I got it at 12000miles & now done 16000miles.....the first 1000miles approx were the crunchy gear change on 2nd gear until the engine warmed up ?

Nath, thanks that's reassuring to know. Is your Avatar a photo of your current car ? I live in C/Ford..I'll look out for you.

As the colder weather returned so did the 2nd gear difficult to select. As it has a Used manufacturers warranty I went and spoke to a dealer, he told me that to analyse it correctly may me gearbox removal ! Anyway despite the Warranty this maybe due to "Wear and Tear"............the car hasn't even got to 18,000 miles yet but what he's saying is that in the 4 years before I bought it in April it had only done 12000 miles (ie 3K a year) so he's saying that it probably did alot of start/stop driving therefore extra wear on 2nd gear synchro !......what are other peoples thoughts ?
As I say cold whether returned so until the Engine has got up to temperature and also warmed the Gearbox & gear oil it is needing occasional double declutch, when it's warmed up it's as good as gold and I forget about it until the next morning.

Yep, mine is a little bin notchy again now that the temps have gone down. I just change to 2nd slowly until it's warmed up, then I hook second like I mean it.

Yes It is my current car in my avatar.

Thanks Nath, I have been looking around Eastleigh since your previous post, thought I saw it near Twyford Rd. Anyway, you are saying you're not going to do anything mechanically or worry re the 2nd gear ?

just changed my Octavia 6 speed @20K and whilst the oil was remarkably free of swarf it was also surprisingly black and burnt smelling mostly motorway miles

Nic, thanks, would you expect swarf at that mileage ? I take it you haven't experience the problem noted above with 2nd Gear selection ? Did changing the oil improve anything ?

I have no plans to do anything about it. I may mention it on it's first service and see if they offer to change the gearbox oil to something a bit more runny.

Just let it take a breath when changing to second whilst the gearbox is cold.

no problem with the box just like to change oil early then leave it unless there's a leak--if you keep your cars I don't see the point of waiting to 70-100K ---damage done? ----previous experience has shown some "bronze" swarf but most of the steel is on the magnet which is only a stripping job to get at

OK I see what you mean, much like running in an engine and changing the oil ?.........so you change it just to get rid of the stray fine metal bits due to the "running in" process. VW/Audi don't recommend Gearbox oil change do they ? Mines been through 4 Annual Services (despite only being on 12700 miles) and this hasn't been completed by the dealer.
