Hey guys, started my car to get home and it's running on 3 cylinders (or so my dad says). Now I DO have a MAP sensor problem, barometic sensor issue, would this be anything to do with it? Also, what things should I check before booking it into a garage? I'm not the best at it but will give it a go, my dad is a lot better than me though.

I did a VAGCOM check and still only showed the MAP sensor issue.

As I said, that's what my dad said so I guess that's not the issue!!!

What else would make my car have loads of loss of power, i'm talking sound like it's going to cut if I go up hill in 3rd at 30mph.

Seriously not a joke guys, just someone not good with cars!

Maybe your dad means it is running on 2 cylinders - i.e. one cylinder is misfiring. Is the engine fault light flashing on the dash and does your car idle rough (steering wheel will vibrate) and smooth a bit when you rev it?

The coil packs seem to be a common thing to go on these cars and would cause these symptoms.

Thats exactly it.

Cheap/expensive to fix?

Possible causes of missfires

Coil packs (very common, easy to identify by swapping them around)
Injectors
Split vacuum pipes
Sticking valves

When you say swap them around I assume you can swap it around and the other cylinder will fire but one still down? From the sounds of things these won't be expensive I assume? Might get my MAP sensor fixed whilst I'm at it.

Yeah work out what cylinder is missfiring (unplugging injectors is usually a prety good idea) and then swap to see if the missfire moves to another cylinder.

All sorted, just waiting for the ECU to reset now (disconnected the battery) then let it idle for 10 mins.

32.70 I paid, LC Charles in Crewe do SCN discount but didn't mention it as was in a rush. Nice and easy to replace, only problem was yesterday I broke the bonnet cable so I'm on the safety latch until next weekend when the part comes in, best way to solve this? I don't think it'll come off the latch but always best be safe. Also, my dad broke the clip on the battery cover when he was trying to get it open with it being cold, not bothered about that though really.

If you are driving around with the bonnet only holding on the safety catch, then I would only drive below 40MPH and hope to avoid driving into snow, sleet or rain as that stuff with get into the front of the engine area when the bonnet is slightly raised.

But cheer up, some of the next design of 1.2 engines are meant to be four cylinder - with turbo and supercharger - oh and it seems that they are not going to be fitted with these Coil On Plug (COP) things - going back to old school way of doing things!

Be really CAREFUL with driving on the latch. My mate did this years back hit a bump and the bonnet folded back into the windscreen :-o That was at just 40 mph.

Try to fix a cable tie or two to hold it.

No supercharger, just a turbo like the 1.4

And pretty sure they still have coil packs.

I had whats sounds to be a similar problem, cruising along and then a loss of power as if i would eventually stall,

for me it was a new throttle body housing so dont know if its the same for you,

but a definate possibility

According to pictures and a foreign press release (I can't remember where), I seem to remember that there would be both "soft" and "hard" breathing versions as the top of the range engines. The pictures actually showed plan views of the engine and you could see that there were long HT leads and shielded plug covers (plugs at front of the engine - old style) and at the rear of the engine the normal old air cooled dual double ended coil assembly. So either someone has planted spoof junk on the web preporting to be VAG, or a big mistake has been make, or I have been seeing things. I was actually a link from one of the VAG small cars forums - so that means, here, briskoda or ukpolo.

The one thing that is true (I seem to remember from the new Polo catolague) is that this 1.2 engine is new and is four cylinder - and all of that tied up with what this other information said.

Ah, I've found the source of this "info" - its on this forum under the new Ibiza section in posting "1.2TSI" .

Techie, have a look in the new Ibiza section in the "1.2TSI" - you will find, if what is shown there is to be believed, that we are both a bit wrong, you are correct to say that its "turbo only" and I am correct to say that "COP has gone" - I am refering to the clip from AEX about the new Polo 1.2TSI.
