hey dudes (and dudettes)

Just wondering if anyone has got their fog lights to turn on with their main beam? can this be done via the vag-com? if so, how?

Also interested about the cornering feature lights that seem to pop up with the new Mercs, i've also seen this with the new mk5 Ibizas, so jealous... Thoughs of you who don't know, when you have the lights on, and switch on a turn signal, the corrisponding fog light comes on, ie. signal left, the left front fog light comes on, signal right, right front fog light comes on... I know this is far fetched but no harm in asking

Cheers

you would have to rewire the lights as the fogs are on a seperate switch. You can get pulled over for having fogs on when you shouldn't (ie. visibility >100 metres) so wouldn't it be illegal to have fogs come on in this way?

if they come on with the main beam, then that is ok. You can have as many lights as you like if they only on with the main beam. (driving lights).
Although having them come on with indicators is just silly in my opinion.

However, perhaps they are not classed as fog lights on mercs?

mk4 Ibiza fogs are on a seperate switch tho, so not designed for use when there is no fog. You couldn't just rewire/vag-com them to come on with main beam and then use them. They would still be fog lights.

i take it they flash with the indicators? can't do any harm i suppose having more indication, but not if they're as bright as ibiza fogs. probs just "sports lights" like the subarus - they arent bright.

i'd like my fogs to come on with main beam, but as said it means rewiring them to a different switch. it would make it easier for me to main-beam-fog-light-blind people who drive around with their fog lights on. it does my head in. some cars do look nice with the fogs on, but when you see a fooking citroen picasso or a focus estate or something naff with them on....i jut think "you look like a pleb."

however its illegal for a reason and if they have them on in the rain in the dark then it really winds me up so i simultaneously switch my fogs on and switch to main beam and blind them back. theres no need.

i often use my fogs when main beams on if the roads are quiet and im not gonna be switching on and off every 10 seconds.

also winds me up when its a bit misty and people put their front and rear fogs on. fronts because its just as annoying as when its raining- they dazzle you, and its illegal to have front fogs on when there's oncoming traffic

rears because there's just no need. i mean if they didnt have that one bright red bulb lit on the rear end of their car i'd definately have approached and not even seen the car there and crashed into the back of it!! NOT! i just think most people have never driven in REAL fog when fog lights are needed. i mean fog where visibility is literally 5 metres and you have to crawl at 15 mph trying to see the cats eyes and white paint to stay on the road - thats where you need the rear fog light to alert other drivers that you're there.

again here the fronts should be used to try and cut some light under the fog to see the road, but still should be turned off if a car approaches frm the other direction, else you'll dazzle them.

rant over!

i have noticed once or twice in really bad fog that just my fog lights did better then having my main beam on aswell just making the fog shine back at me... with my golf there interigated in my headlights with the xenon look so in theory i could prob use them insted of my main beam (the light beam is not spread out its directional to the ground) and would look like oem xenons just without the long beam. lol

had just got my 06 plate sport in yellow and i thought i was cool leaving the cinema car park with them on, then forgot about them and went off down the dual carriageway home. he pulled me up and fined me for it.

was it actually low visability?

surly it defeats the purpose of fog lights if you can only have them when your not facing any oncoming traffic

well no it was a clear night lol, so i deserved it. although i did try and tell him i'd come across the moors where it was foggy and hten forgot to switch them off. and he said well doesnt it show on the dash that your fogs are on, and i tried explaining that actually no it doesnt it just changes the little tiny light near the switch to a different colour, which you can't see for the steering wheel... but he still fined me. fair enough really i was just posing for once.

well no cos the headlights are bright enough to warn oncoming cars that you're there, even in thick fog. The front fogs are to cut through it with extra light in the right place, to see the road. the rear fog is obviousy used purely for alerting cars of your presence because tail lights alone dont glow bright enough to be seen.

thats my take on it anyway. could be wrong.

that cant be right, as if that is the case, then your legally only allowed to see where your going in the fog if there is no oncomig traffic?

ok its probably not illegal to have them on in the fog, im just saying the fronts are for you to see the road, not others to see you.

and that you look like a pleb if you have fogs on cos its spitting. and you dazzle me, so i blind you back lol. and that you look like an even bigger pleb if you EVER use your rear fog unless the fog is so thick you couldnt see your hand in front of your face lol.

ive also found it dangerous on certain cars when rear fogs are on - if they're dual fog lights, and a bit close to the brake lights - cos its not immediately obvious when they're braking if you're not staring at the lights as you're driving!

i know there are regulations about the layouts and distances of all the lights but some cars fogs are stupidly similar to the brake lights.

bmws and mercs have these lights its just some adaptive drive thing they have as part of an option from standard. It helps as well as the headlights moving to light up the path you are travelling in

ive seen this gof light fearture when they come on when making a turn, - i cant understand why this is not illegal.

My mate had it on a fiat brava courtest car. We actually got pulled for them. Copper pulled us saying we had our fog lights on. We had to show him how the one come on when you turned that way under 15 or 20mph i think it comes on. He didnt believe us at first when we told him. Think its to light up the curb and that when parking or on country roads going slowly round corners.
