I get something a bit like that, not so much a grinding noise as such, more just like a whine. Mine appears when I'm slowing down, changing down from 3rd to 2nd and a bit worse from 2nd to 1st. Does it go away if you put it in neutral and then coast to a stop?

i was told by a gearbox specialist that the main gearbox bearing race starts to spin in the gearbox casing and requires replacement and modification to stop it happening. £450 i was quoted so im in the process of saving.

I've read a bit about that noise, if it's the same thing I get on my car then some folks think it's the differential, some think it's the gearbox oil needing changed.

Personally, I'm going to try changing the gearbox oil first, as my gearbox does feel a little clunky until the car's been running for a few miles or so. I gather SEAT changed the recommended gearbox oil a few times since the Mk1. LCR went on sale so if your car is likely to still have the original stuff in it then it likely won't be what SEAT say to use now.

thats the really strange thing about it the gears feel perfect, gear box is nice and tight, everything seems as it should be.....just a horrible noise that doesnt seem to affect anything.

Hi there,

I am having the same problem and am curious to see if changing the gearbox oil made any difference?

Definetly hear spinning and slight whining from gearbox.

Cheers.

The guys at total VAg in leighton buzzard tried everything with mine and couldnt find the problem so ended up putting a recon gear box in and now its perfect.
came to around £800 supplied and fitted.

Hi all,

I am a newbie owner of a cupra and my gear box is doing the same. Does anyone know if it is dangerous and if so how dangerous? Also was thinking of putting in lucas gearbox oil. Does anyone know if this will help with the problem? Any help appreciated.

Thanks.
