How much?

What sort of price should i be paying for a late mk2 gti 16v with around 100k on the clock? it has fsh and only minor marks.
Ive looked on ebay/autotrader and local papers but the 16v is far and few between to find a price.

What sort of things should i look out for at that mileage?

check the clutch pedal as they are prone to failiure, just look above it where the cable connects and check that the bracket isn't split, mine went on my 8v 3weeks after i got the car, not sure how much to pay depends on the colour i suppose if its not very common like a Kiwi Yellow people always want more, also check all the paintwork as the kiwi yellow 1's fade like f**k and mine didn't T-cut out like i thought it might do

Cheers i knew the mk3's had the clutch peddle problem,somthing else to check now then.

It has 5 spokes,iv looked on ebay and they dont seem to be making decent money at the moment.

Big range in prices at the moment as because of the age/type of cars they are they attract different types of owners.

At ine end of the scale you've got the 500 quid rough dogs owned by scumbags to the "mint" examples for 3k by the chancers at the other end of the scale.

I would say you want to be spending around 2k minimum for something decent.

As a guide, I paid 2k last July for a 98 16v in copper with 71k with aircon and recaros. FSH etc.

I've had 6k trouble free motoring since then, managed to claim over 600 back from work for a few business miles, so as far as I'm concerned the car owes me nothing. If I had kept my last car over the same period I would have spent over 2.2k in finance alone!

Good cars IF you get a good one.

I got mine in September. I paid £995 for my 1.4 ibiza.........and that was a dog. Even tho it had no electrics it still kept going wrong and I was pretty happy when I sold it. The 16v cost me £2250 (£2500 with an MOT), and hasn't missed a beat in the past 6 months #touches wood#.

Like the old saying: "You get what you pay for" (to an extent of course)

I've seen on Ebay Motors a few going for 1500.. Are they going to be dogs? I'm after upgrading to a 16v gti in September. I'm still a student so the plan is to save up over the summer working full time.

It seems crazy how cheap these cars are! What else are some signs to look out for?

I dont mind spending decent money on the right one but dont want to pay over the odds either.
It does seem at the moment the sellers cant get what they want for there cars.Or all the ones forsale at the moment are abit rough and aren't worth the money there asking.

I would say you would get something useable and in half decent condition for 1.5k.

Dont forget though, these cars are all getting on for 8-12 years old now, so you would be very lucky IMO to get one in "showroom" condition, and if you did I bet you would be looking towards 2.5-3k.

If I was to sell mine, which I'm not at the moment, which is a FSH 98R 2.016v, 77k, copper GTI spec with aircon and sunroof, MK3 cupra wheels, full MK3 20VT interior inc steering wheel, and 20VT exhaust, few marks on the body but in overall Very good condition, I would be expecting at least 1800-2k for it.

Another issue is the prices of the MK3 20VT, they've come down in price a lot lately, and 4.5-5k will get you into one of those, I bought some parts off a lad who had bought one for £900 with a goosed engine, pick a 20vt up for that and you've got a half decent MK3 20VT for 1.5k.

I really like the MK2 2.016v, but they are not really a "popular" motor in the way of say, a golf gti or 205gti. As such people are perhaps not prepared to spend money maintaining them properly as they get older, hence the dog rough examples kicking about.
