De-cat pipe

Hi there,

I read on another forum that you can remove the particulate filter on a TDi and you won't fail an MOT. I am new to diesels, I pick my Ibiza PD130 up tomorrow and am having it remapped next month.

With a baby on the way, I don't hae a lot of money to play with so want some relatively cheap ways of improving the performance. Will getting a de-cat section of piping to replace the filter on my car help with the performance any or would it be better to leave it, and will I pass the MOT?

Grateful for any responses from people who have done this.

Yes it will be fine for MOT - Mie's done 3 mots with no cat now... But it's important to distinguish between a simple catalytic convertor as found on the older cars, compared to the electronically wired in particulate filters found on the new diesels.

I have a decat pipe here I had on my pd100. Only want £5 for it as it's lying around doing nowt. Not sure if its the same bore as the pd130 zorst, but it was a perfect cat replacement pipe. Just needs one bolt and some of the surface rust scraping off. (Mods: I know this is kind of an advert, but its something I can't be bothered to put in a full post)

That's a done deal mate if someone can confirm if this is the correct bore for my PD130. Is the change over simple to make? Do I have to cut the cat out?

If you have a PD130 you have a CAT not a particulate filter which is a totally different thing. Yes the CAT can be easily removed and you will still pass an MOT. Unless you have a hybrid turbo and lots of other mods done if you remove your CAT you will notice no improvement in power or turbo pick up so it is a waste of time and money.

Should help if you're planning a remap though? The cat is just one restriction in the exhaust that is not necessary. Nothing will be done initially I concur.

On my pd100 pipe, the end with the two bolts went over the original exhaust and bolted down. The other end was welded on, so the best idea is to obtain a decently chunky exhaust clamp, say around 3" or 4" wide and do a similar cut and shut exercise, using exhaust paste to make a good seal. It will improve the exhaust note a bit too, as would removing the backbox for a similar bit of straight pipe too.

My car passed it's MOT / smoke test first time round with all the current mods... And that's with a very smokey map. Must say I was suprised, and have always kept my old CAT just incase.

You know, I never actually knew what happened with mine. It's probably lying about somewhere, but to be honest, there's not a chance in hell it's ever going back on my car.

I still have my PD160 Cat laying in my scrapyard/garage only did a few hundred miles. Come to think of it there should be one from my Audi as well unless Allards kept it when i had the new down pipe system fitted. Must go down and had a look, i know the exhaust as i trip over it last night.

Doh! You know I'm getting your old gearbox in a roundabout way. Saw one on Ebay and it turned out to the chap who got your old engine & box. Getting it off him now when I'm up in the Midlands. Small world eh? Now - how much abuse did you give it generally?

My gearbox has taken 154,000 miles of abuse, and it's still firm and notchy... I'm sure it'll be fine!? (Mike? ;o)

The gearbox had only done 10,000 miles and was in great condition, shame i cannot say the same about the car. So that my old gearbox,drive shaft,tyres,down pipe that you have had so far. Anything else your after from my PD160 jason.

[vulture mode] What's left!? [/vulture] Last time I checked, that other driveshaft was looking a little mis-shapen. I would have had that off you for spares for sure had tractor man not used to put your car back on it's wheels....
