is it normal too have what would appear to be rust on the brake discs?

i noticed it when washing the car at the weekend, the same sorta colour is also on a couple of the tyre walls.

Car has only done 2700 miles, so would this appear to be a fault or a 'charachteristic' ??

I have had it on all sorts of cars from my MG Midget to my toledo. It's usually caused by rain or wet on the disks and the air then oxidise or something. Usually appears after the car has been sitting for a day or so. Is it much rust?

Here is a tip for you: after I wash my car, I take it for a spin down the road and back, this dries off the wheels, alloys and disc brakes. Which stops that rusty looks developing, and makes applying what ever you use to the tyre wall/alloys much easier.

I do this to, works well! As for the discs, I think they also rust 'off the face' on the centre towards the wheel, which doesn't look too good... See a few MK2 Leons with this now... Shame Seat didn't treat or protect this non-contact area to stop the rust..

i have just sprayed all mine with heat resistant aluminium spray, rather vain yes but i like it.

You sprayed you disc brakes? lol I have done my hubs, but not discs, that's insane.

My Trick is let off the handbrake and put car into gear.
this stops brakes sticking to discs after washing car.

have you a picture of your sprayed discs ?

I've seen a few posts about people painting their hubs with silver hammerite. I might do mine, but I'm too lazy. I'll probably just live with horrid orangey brown hubs.

As for discs, this was the morning after I washed mine :p

To solve this problem seat could get the hub + vanes of the discs coated with a anti-rust coating which would probably cost 4 pounds per unit. But the only manufacturers who do this are Mercedes, BMW and Audi. Why because they can recoup the cost on the customer due to their high margins.

There is a Leon Cupra for sale at a local dealer and they have had the centre of the hubs painted, looks very good. I'm sure if it was only £4 per wheel no one would complain about paying an extra £16 for clean good looking hubs!

Had my brand new leon for a couple of weeks now, Keep checking the windows and doors after all the rain we have had and no problem. :)

noticed disks are no longer the sleek silver when I brought the car but a lovely rusty brown colour

they do not look good on a two week old Leon, anyone have best way to clean them up????? :(

I know how you feel mate, once you have driven around a little bit the rust will go away until the next rainy day or car wash then its back to another drive to remove the rust:whistle:

the discs rust so quickly due to the amount of carbon in the steel, ok it may look a little unsightly after rain/washing, but it does give increased breaking performance. I know i'd choose a little rust over poorer performance.

Id sooner have silver discs with the increased breaking performance:happy:
