Hi Guys,

Economy aside which of these two cars would you go for. I currently have an Ibiza FR TDI but looking to upgrade to something bigger and faster. My commute is less than 10 miles a day so i'm not fussed about economy.

Which would you choose and why?

Cheers,

Darren

Thats a bit of an odd comparison
Cupra vs VXR would be the logical choice

Have you taken either for a drive? I think that would be your first reference point. If your only doing a 10mile commute is the FR TDI with the DPF the more risky option?

If petrol prices wern't a problem, and I didnt have a big commute, personally id be looking at an R32 a year or two old for the same money..

The VXR is utter shite!!! The interior is bland, the seats are crap, the dash is boring...pretty much all of it is crap bar a few things.

Exterior looks good and sporty where as the Cupra is on the bland side.
The key less entry, push start engine is a cool feature.

The engine is aggressive but i felt the ride to washy for me, even with the sport button engaged its still crap.

VXR is nowhere near as good as the cupra!!!!

Cupra all the way!

Cheers for the info so far.

I haven't test driven the VXR but I did have a go in the Astra SRI 150 which I liked but was only a fraction faster than my FR (hence now looking at the VXR).

In terms of looks I prefer the VXR even though it is a bit more attention *****ish than the Cupra.

Performance wise they seem pretty much the same?

CupraSport why did you choose the Cupra over the VXR?

Cheers

Also depends if you want a 3 door car or a 5 door.
Had an Astra SRi before the Cupra and in 2 years was in the garage a dozen time with things going wrong and needing to be replaced. Plust the VXR has bad torque steer even my 125bhp SRI had torque steer. The cupra has none.

Go for the Cupra!

My FR has noticeable torque steer, I'd assume the Cupra does too. Keeps things interesting.

I'm looking for 3 door ideally, the sport hatch on the Astra is a lot nicer than the 5 door astra.

As for torque steer, this will be very interesting to hear about - my old Clio 182 had it quite bad but you kind of get used to wrestling with the steering wheel :)

In terms of reliability my Ibiza has been in the garage 3 times in a year which i wouldn't exactly call good :S

I drove both cars the VXR on a trackday the the Leon on normal roads, the Leon is more composed at speed and corners flatter. TBH not a lot of torque steer in either car (maybe I was not using the accelerator as an on / off button :cartman:)The VXR would have been a slightly cheaper car as well. The seats are nicer in the Leon as well more comfortable and just as grippy. Looks wise the cupra is less aggressive (I did buy yellow thou :p) but it is still quieter than the VXR. The interior is nice in the astra but I bought for driving experience :). The Leon also manages to have more physical grip on the road surface (gives you a warm feeling when pushing hard within the legal limits of course)

On another note I found the brakes in the Leon a lot better than those in the Astra which where not as responsive and suffered fade quicker. In addition the steering on the Leon was marginally better, more feel.

If you read EVO magazines write up following the long term test of the Leon that would give you food for thought, the road tester had the Astra and the Leon back to back over a period of 18 months.

At the end of the day you need to drive both and make your mind up as it's your money and you have to live with the car.

There is a member who has a VXR on here and he has had it remapped to use less fuel on the comute etc. They have used the sport button, basicly when not in sport mode its in eco mode (fuel sipping) when button depressed lots of ponies. It depends why you are buying.

In addition if I was to track either car the Leon would behave a lot better :funk:

Thanks CupraSport for taking the time to give a honest review of both cars. I will definitely bare everything in mind and think a test drive of both is now in order :)

Two words for that BIG and HEAVY (having driven one)

I have also driven one (and I am only 5ft 2). I absolutely LOVED it. Terrible fuel economy but it's real muscle car and it howls. Tremendous. Totally impractical for me but what the hell, it's damn fun if you want a BIG engine. I do love the Cupra though :)
