Hi People,

Took the Ibiza for MOT yesterday, and they failed it on 4 items.

1 - Horn doesnt work - I fixed that allready!!
2 - Offside front Macpherson strut has excessive movement at the upper attachment.
3 - Front wheel has a nasty dent - they say not legal they say!!
4 - Exhaust emissions carbon monoxide content at idle excessive. but it passed on high revs.

Any recomendations on how to repair these items?

I looked at the costing they quoted me to replace the uppermount on the front strut, £129 per side.
I just called GSF and was quoted £11.16 for the kit per side. WTF?

yeh i got lumbered with both sides at the same time on my last MOT mate, nightmare!

think its quite labour intensive to replace (i might be wrong) so overall maybe £80-100 per corner.

i got my top mounts for about £6 each (about £13 each from stealers) & did myself - it's a right job if you've not got a set of spring compressors (about £20 odd from motorspares). I tried & hours later ended up leaving it on axle stands until I bought them. If you've got the spring compressors, it's fairly starightforward. Took me a couple of hours to do both sides. It's worth having tracking etc done after to make sure all is lined up straight too.

That must be a fair amount of movement because these cars have a bigger tolerance on the MOT because of the design of the suspension they move alot more etc.

Check with a couple of other local garages ans see what they quote for fitting the struts.

I wouldn't have thought a dented front wheel would cause an mot failure. If its balanced and theres no obvious sign of it affecting the drive then i can't see why its failed.

As for the emissions, stick some redex in the tank before the test and take it for a drive for a good 20mins, that should get the engine warmed up and allow it to pass.

Well cant see the bead of the tyre, but i will send it off the be repaired, or just buy new wheels.

Martin Hill 198 where do you stay?

If you get everything else sorted and just need it to pass the MOT stick the spare wheel on temporarily , then you can replace the damaged alloy when one comes up on the cheap. Upper strut mounts must be seriously knackered to have failed as they're normally allowed quite a lot of movement, only real problem is the emissions, could be something simple like a failed catalytic converter but high emissions has the potential to be an expensive problem.

well it passed on high revs for emissions, but when it idles it sounds like it has cams in it, when i bought it the previous owners said they did put cams in it, not sure what tho, could this be the problem?

Could be your problem, if it's been tuned to that extent it might not even have a cat. A lumpy idle could be a number of things though, idle control valve perhaps?
If it does have high lift camshafts and they're causing the excessive emissions I can't think of anything you could do other than fit standard cams, or find a different MOT tester who understands :D

Racier cams will for sure mean an emission fail. Also likely the Catalyst has been removed. Cams really need unrestricted gas flow to work properly.

I'd pull out the plugs and check the gaps and see that they aren't fouled up (black and sooty). A sympathetic MOT tester is what you need really.

There is a guy in Brentford who is pretty good if you explain it has cams in:
