It could be a n alternator bearing or a belt not tight enough, Without hearing it it is hard to say.
Try a short blast of WD-40 just behind the alternator drive belt pulley, I won't be a cure but if it stops it's the bearing, If it doesn't stop then try the same on the alternator belt itself, It might not help but if it does then at least you know where it is coming from.
Not sure about the pedal box sorry.

The full pedal box is a nightmare on this! - Why do you need one?

If it needs one, get a quote first....no surprises then!!

The whine could be lots of things! Nothing really common on them for it!

cheers. its booked in for its service next week now anyways, see if they pick anything up. its going to ted johnson barnsley so i expect they would pick up the pedalbox since it does have the classic symptoms

As this post says, Spray WD40 at idle and with the bonnet open and try spraying each pulley until the whine goes. The effect only lasts a few seconds. It may be the belt itself, if it has not been changed for some years and is glazed/shiny on the inside then change it and make sure you get the tension correct.

When did it last have a cam belt

Could always be the fuel pump if it is a hummmmm as appose to a whine.
