Some of you might remember a while ago that I said I came across a 996 turbo out on the roads, and that it was really no quicker than my stage 2 plus k1, and I was met with comments such as no way and it would leave me behind etc etc. Now at the time I left it at that cause I wasn't even 100 sure that it was the turbo version although I was pretty certain that it was.

Anyway, friend of mine has a 996 turbo, and another member from this site has a stage 2 plus Cupra. So off I went as arranged for the cars to go down a air strip so we could do some propper comparisons.

The result? Well let's put it this way, I was right originally, the two cars are evenly matched pretty much, the turbo is a smidgen faster, but the Cupra can latch onto it's back bumper and stay there.

The turbo that I went against all those months ago wasn't standard either it had a uprated exhaust.

Time after time I'm learning just how hard it is to beat a stage 2 plus car. So now we know that the stage 2 plus car will stick with 996 turbos, BMW m5, merc cls 55 amg, and beat a host of others.

That sounds great and I bet the cupra is immense, however I'm sure if you were to put both cars on an actual track there would only be one winner and by a country mile!!!!

From a standard cupra how much money do you have to throw at it to get to a stage 2 and what exactly do you need.

Also what is the mpg like?

I,ve tagged onto an R8 near me a couple of times. Makes me laugh when he can,t loose me.:D
I would say my mpg is exactly the same round town but a couple mpg better on long runs due to having so much more torque available lower down the revs.

erm there are certain aspects of the k1 that I miss for sure, but now with a map I pull on the 911 turbo in every gear.

Forgive me if I'm mistaken, but doesn't the BMW M5 have over 500bhp? Don't get me wrong - I've never driven a stage 2+ Cupra, but even with a lot of tuning I wouldn't expect a FWD 4pot hatchback to have much on a RWD V10 performance car

compare power to weight ratios, power delivery and where and how much max torque is achieved. It was actually a m6 we ran against and not a m5 so dunno if there is a difference between the two!

It sure does, but it also has an extra 455kg to shift.

BHP per ton in an M5 is 277 vs 285 in a Cupra stage2+.

So it's not really a surprise.

Again it poses the question, what do you you replace the cupra with!! Nice BHP figures by the way Pov!

Thanks, 430 and counting!

That's what so many of us struggle with. Atleast when it comes to straight-line performance anyway.

Obviously I have gone down the Ttrs route and wayne is gonna get a 996 turbo as they are a beast when mapped. It's hard to beat the Cupra in a straight-line, yes there are quicker cars but I have never come across anything on the public roads that has truly walked away from me in the k1 apart from a old cortina with a v8 engine.

but your going off a manufacturers quoted BHP for the BMW and a generous dyno for the s2+ cupra.

Saturdays rolling road day @JKM yielded a highest S2+ output of 330Hp(based on 1375kg). that makes 240Hp/ton.

what weight and BHP have you used to make the 285Hp/ton. for instance @ 360Hp the car would have to weigh 1260kg which they dont, therefore for you to make 285Hp/ton @ 1375kg you would need 391Hp....................

for what its worth an E46 M3 (standard) made 327Hp with heatsoak on saturday so was only 3Hp down on the top s2+

Tbh Arin@APR told me that a stage 2+ ko4 tfsi is around 300whp and he knows his stuff, hp figures are often inflated over here but that begs the question are other hot hatches like astra vxr's really pulling 300hp on stage 3 and wolf 330 st's really 330 because i completely destroy these cars!

Regardless of so called hp figures in the real world stage 2+ cupra can keep with an Audi R8 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SHQvSLqU7Is ;)

Don't know about an M6 but a Stage 2+ Leon is defo. no match for a V10 M5. Met several on the autobahn and every time I meet one thats willing to race I can stay in it's tail until 200 km/h after that it pulls away quite easily.
People tend to forget that you can tune everything but an untuned M stays far away from it's limits and therefore keeps there power much longer under harsch conditions (heatsoak etc.).
Think a 2+ is somewhere between a 335i and M3 which is quite an achievement for a car costing far less.

Its similar to a tuned 335i and walks away from an e92 m3 ;)
