Leon FR CR Fast Takeoff

Hi guys, my fr cr is standard at the moment. Is it better to have high revs and start in 2nd when at lights and wanting to get a fast take off or would it be better to go through the gears starting in first?

Only problem is the wheel spin in 1st so I am having to be really carefull in 1st not to wheel spin when trying to beat someone off the line.

Any thoughts?

My answer is to drive properly from the lights, you have nothing to prove.

Save your clutch and if you really want to prove a point then get them through the gears.

Diesels are not too good off the mark.

But if you want to kill your clutch then yeah start in 2nd but i dont recommend this at all!

yeah i understand, its just the boy racers in the 1.2 corsa and vxr's that sometimes I feel like trying to get off the marker quicker.

I was just wondering the better starting off point. It isnt something I would be doing all the time, just in times of a little fun.

1500 in 1st then clutch out slowly as you increase. then stright into 2nd and plant it!

With the map on my FR, 1st gear boost was limited so I never held it in 1st long.

Use the launch control & go thro' the gears quick, then start a saving fund for a new clutch...

Snap! Mine used to do it in 4th aswell but Ive now got two new conti sport contact 3's on the front so it tends to grip a bit better heh

I think ill just 1st gear to 1500 then 2nd gear and a bit of plant but it will squeel in 2nd too. Just gotta give them that small cars length at the start I guess.

Everyone wants to race me now though, good points and bad points.

Must be your driving style never had anyone try to race me was much much worse in my 1 Series

While you're stationary push the accelerator all the way down, it won't go over 2500rpm until you engage the clutch, it's supposed to help you get the optimum launch without too much wheelspin

Ah didnt know this was possible. How long has this been a feature on VAG cars?

I'm not 100% sure vag meant that to be launch control I think it's more to limit the torque into 1st gear!

That's strange because I have an FR and I don't get people trying to race me all the time. Perhaps it's something to do with YOUR driving style?

If you are so keen to race then take it to the track. In any case, if you are determined to carry on with racing from the lights then you're in the wrong car for it.

With regards to your comments on 1.2 Corsas and VXR's...
1) What have you got to prove by pitting your 2L against a 1.2? And why would you want to? Anybody with an ounce of sense would just smile and leave them to it.

2) A corsa VXR would beat an FR TDi (and probably an FR TFSI tbh) off the line to any legal speed.




And yes, the "Launch control" isn't a true launch control (ie, one which controls traction for you etc). All it does is limit the revs when you set off. Lift your clutch fast enough and you'll be sat there spinning wheels whilst the other person is off into the distance - you wouldn't get that with true launch control.

That sounds about right, it would seem odd if it was truely intended as launch control as it is not present on the petrol models.

This is correct also, proper launch control in race cars is designed to get you off the line as fast as possible in a straight line. In the Leon if you release the clutch too fast the TC will completely cut the power.

I found this difficult on my local drag strip at the weekend. I have stage 2 so traction is even more of an issue.

A B series engined type R civic (1.8) with an LSD wanted a standing start and I opted for 1st gear, minimal revs and engage the clutch, pulled 1st a little more than i should have, into 2nd and sank my foot, terrible move. While he was limiting 1st I was getting all sorts of wheelspin and wheel hop, gaining no ground whatsoever... Civic took 2nd and a car length while I switched to 3rd... maintained the same gap until he hit the limiter in 5th and I sailed on by... Cant really take that as a win unfortunately

On a seperate occasion I found myself up against a 1.6 B series civic stripped out rear interior with LSD and we had a go at a few twisties, bit hairy to say the least... I managed to stick with it and would have got it no problem with a bit more of a straight but they are just too nimble and light!!

I'm a bit of a sore loser if im honest lol and hate all things Honda, especially Type R's so i'm now thinking about a quickshift and there will be a post going up shortly regards weight reduction

Already have lightweight brakes coming and hope to have lightweight alloys in the summer!
