Hi,

This morning on reversing my car out of the garage I managed to get the driver side mirror caught up in the garage door and broke the mirror housing :(. Needless to say I was absolutely gutted as I have only just bought the car a month ago. Anyway, the mirror cover came off and the actual mirror is still intact, it's the housing that is damaged. I have now gone and ordered the part from my dealer (surprise surprise they don't have the mirror in stock so I have to wait 3 weeks) and was told that besides the 140 euros for the mirror i'd have to fork over another 40 to get it changed. I was wondering how difficult it would be to change the mirror myself to try and save a few quid as I'm really low on cash as the moment. Is there a guide somewhere on disassembling and reassembling it or is it too tough to do? I'd really appreciate any help you can give me so I can decide whether to have a go myself or take it to the dealer.

Thanks

Quite easy from what I understand as it just clips over the mirroe, unless you damaged the under part which if you twist it up you should see some torx screws and just unscrew it.

Thanks for your reply. If someone has some pictures or a guide on how to do it I'd appreciate it as I'm fearful of doing more damage than good if i'm going around blind. On a side note with the mirror up there is a rubber gasket with a slit which I assume is where the torx screw is. Does the gasket come off or is there just 1 screw holding the mirror to the door. In other words if i use a torx screwdriver in the slit in the rubber gasket will the whole mirror come off?

can't say 100% but i reckon it will. Basing this on the fact that i tightened up my wobbly mirror by tightening the torx bolt hidden under the gasket.
My worry would be that the other side of the torx bolt is a standard nut which when undone fully would then drop inside the door panel behind the trim.. The door card is a pain to remove as mounted to it is all the window mechanism etc. I dont know this for certain mind, it could be that the bolt goes into a threaded cube of metal the other side of the door panel, can't see form techies pics in the thread linked to above.

How confident are you? you could be a trailblazer and make a "how to" thread from your experience

There is a thread on here by Techie in with the speaker question on the Ibiza 6J FAQ's, which deals with door panel removal. I've used it to remove mine to have the trim panels retrimmed, it's fairly straight forward. If you know whata screwdriver is, and are careful, it can be done.

loose as in wobbles a bit?
if so just use a torx screwdriver through the slit in the grommet which is revealed when you fold the mirror up, and it'll tighten back up.

I had a similar issue when i reversed mine into a wall (D'oh!) everythings fine apart from the black plastic bit around the bottom edge, which is cracked and has an inch long slice missing. SEAT want best part of £200 for a whole new mirror unit as they're electric, apparently i can't just buy the plastic bit and swap the mech over. Luckily the mirror cover is ok so that's holding it all together atm.

I have the same problem as you basically as it's the black plastic which cracked. I thought 140 euros was expensive but 200 sterling is over the top! Is this just for the mounting (the black part)? When I went to the dealer he told me you can order 3 parts : the black mounting (with motors which is why it's the most expensive part), the cover (painted to match the car) and the actual mirror.

On the bolt question, yes that was one of my worries too that there's a bolt inside which will fall off once I take the mirror off. And the door card removal is definitely beyond my abilities (given that I'd be afraid of breaking a clip or something).

Can someone please confirm whether you can unscrew the mirror off safely without then having to open the door card as well?

Thanks

Nightflight you said

I need to tighten my drivers side up after some body gave it a good clout but when i turn it up all I see is back pastic. is the screw/bolt behind the mirror glass?

Mines got slightly damaged this week, the housing seems to have unclipped itself and won't go back in, not sure how it happened lol

The bolt is a Torx T40 accessible through the rubber slit as someone above said.

If you un-do it fully you don't lose the bolt as the fitting is threaded, it doesn't fall in to the door card so no need to worry.

I too have been investigating as similar to you guys I knocked my mirror at the weekend. My drive is not very wide (it appears next door must have stolen a foot at some point!) and I caught it on the gate. The gate has now been removed and I now have gap a few inches wider, makes all the difference!

Cracked the housing though and gutted to hear it's £200 to replace. The electronics are fine, I can't believe that they won't just sell the casing!?

ok guys tried tipping up the mirror glass and foudn a tiny hole no way to get anything in there.

removed the painted rear cover to see a large metal hollow rod with the electrics ging through it but absolutley nothing to tighten the mirror up no torx screw or anything.

mine is an 07 are we talking about the the older type?

guess the door panel has to come off however my local seat dealer is not interested in the work although when it had it 4 years service 2 months ago they loved that £900 new timing belt new water pump full service and MOT...
