any one used snow socks ? just wondered if it's worth considering... they cost about £120 for set so cheap

Good for short range, slow speed, to get you through.

Not in any way comparable to winter tyres.

Is that 19s?

Mytyres are doing winter tyres with alloys now. Biggest steel wheels are 16s which won't clear the Cupra brakes. You could get some 18s (or 17s?) with tyres already fitted from them for around £200 a corner. I'm not sure if the designs are up to much but it's a better bet...

Still a lot of money though. Trouble is, once you've driven a winter on the correct tyres, you'll never do one on summers again.

yeah they're 19'', 235/35/19 fitment. Rocksotne tyres (never heard of them) go for £90 which seems very reasonable. Might go with them, Don't really have a lot of space to put spare set of wheels but might have to conside getting some cheap 18''

Ordered my Vred's yesterday from MyTyres. Priced at £152 a corner but like its been said, once you've run winter tyres you will never look back.
These will probably hardly be used as the missus has 15" steels with winter tyres on her Suzuki Swift and its brilliant in the winter roads.

As has been said, once you've used winter tyres you'll know what all the fuss is about. I'm quite sceptical when it comes to all the recommendations about the latest "must have thing", but after going over to winter tyres last year I have to say that, pound for pound, it's one of the best things I've ever done to a car.

Remember that these tyres are not just for snow (so "snow socks" are not an option). They work best when the weather gets below and average of 7 deg C - in the dry, the rain and even the snow too!!

Word to the wise;

Go and price up a set of tyres for your current alloy wheels. They WILL be £££££ [:@]

Then go and buy yourself a set of smaller diameter (16" or 17") steel wheels and get the according winter tyres for these. You want the smallest wheel that will clear your brakes. (Most of the online tyre shops sell steel wheel and winter tyre packages these days).

Believe me, it will nearly always be cheaper to do this than it will to buy large diameter low-profile winter tyres. (Don't ask me how I know this...:cry::cry:)

You also have the added advantage of;
- not having to go to a tyre depot to get your tyres changed on your rims twice a year
- not risking dinking your expensive alloys on icy kerbs
- not getting salt damage to your alloy rims

And don't bu66er about with cheapo Chinese "Hong Feng" (or whatever brand) winter tyres - they will be cr4p - end of story. This is about stopping your P+J from going off the road into a field in the rain or snow, or worse - running into another car. Spend the money on good well-known branded winter tyres using my advice above - anything else is false economy. Pirelli, Dunlop, Michelin and especially Conti all make excellent tyres for this purpose.

Hope that helps.

was waiting for a thread about this i need to seriously consider getting some this year as my leons dsg so cant imagine that being great in the snow :(.

will 16" steel wheels fit over fr brakes? as the 17's on there atm look pretty close.

I tried that already and they don't seem to do any bigger than 16'' and Im sure my breaks won't clear... Not sure what to do now - get winter tyres on my 19'' and maybe wrap them so protect from salt etc. or get cheap 18'' and put winter tyres on them

Does anyone have any positive reports on the GOODYEAR ULTRA GRIP PERFORMANCE 2?

It's either those or the Wintrac Extreme for me I think. The Wintrac have a rim protector which is an added bonus.

What model is your Leon?

Not sure, but I'd imagine anything up to an FR would take a 16" wheel?

(Say the brakes are 300mm = 12"; leaves 2" radial clearance to go over the calipers.... :shrug:)

Lots of people rate falken 452's as a good summer tyre so what's peoples opinions on the HS 439's mytyres have to offer at £115. (probably dearer for me as I'm in Northern Ireland) but they are a lot cheaper than the likes of the wintrac xtreme's...

Google is your friend... http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Tyre/Falken/Eurowinter-HS439.htm

Also worth noting that the link to magazine reviews are handy on this site, since they use a lot of the German/Swiss mags, and they have a much greater understanding of what a winter tyre is for...
