Airbag light - dealer or local garage?

Hi guys, my airbag warning light has come on. I've had a search and it looks like my best bet is to take it to a garage. I don't fancy messing around and setting off the airbags lol!

Just wondering if I would be better off paying a premium and taking it to a main dealer in the hope that they will be familiar with the fault and likely solutions, or take it to my local auto electrician/garage and hope they can fix it. Which I imagine would be cheaper! My worry is that it could be one of several things causing it, and therefore Seat main dealer will hopefully get to the cause straight away?? Just kinda expect a main dealer to rip me off though!

Find someone with VCDS and slip them a tenner to scan it for you.

I think a guy at work might know someone with that hopefully. Would that fix it, or just tell me where the problem was? Suppose its worth asking him though, as I expect a garage will charge a lot to fix this!

Main dealer is 100% your best bet,if you get someone to scan it for you does that mean they can make a accurate diag and fix it ?
If the main dealer gets it wrong and i dont think they would then you would not pay them as you will have asked them to sort your airbag fault and they havn,t
And looking at your location i can say with confidence either of your local dealers will fix it with a accurate diag ,and at a fair price

Would prob just give you a nod in the right direction. Will prob be the under seat connectors. Not that bad a fix if it is that.

Thanks for the advice guys I think I'd be better off having a mechanic look at it, and if Stoke or Crewe Seat are recommendable I'll get it in this weekend or whenever they can fit me in. Hopefully get it diagnosed and sorted in one visit. Was just worried they might bill me a fortune! Heard some horror stories about so many main dealers!! They can't all be bad then eh!

Try and find someone with vag.com thingy.
I've had the light on three times, all for the same fault.

1st time - Put car into dealer who took £60 to tell me 'there's something wrong with the airbag system' DOH! then took to my local Audi Indy wo fixed it for £20. Drivers seat.

2nd time - took straight to Audi Indy, who fixed for free as a wedding present (was getting married the next day!) Passenger seat.

3rd time - (last weekend) - checked fault in vcds, fixed problem, cleared fault. Drivers seat. HEY PRESTO!

All were one of the wires that go into the front seats was loose. What happens is when the seats are moved, sometimes the wire connectors (which are held onto the seat chassis with 'fir tree' connectors) come free, so the ECU sees the interittent connection and shuts down the airbag ssytem. In all cases, the fir tree was either replaced, or just plugged back in again.

Not saying that's defo whats wrong. but its apparently a common fault to check out!

Take a look under the seats, make sure nothing is hanging loose. It may not solve your problem but it will be the cheapest option.

Iv got this fault still on my leon. Dont know how it came on and took a look under seats could not see anything out of place either. Are my airbags disabled? Also should i just get it connected to a vagcom to turn the light off coz i dont know why it came on :S

The airbag system will prob be disabled while the light is on. The under seat connectors are quite a common fault, not only on seat but on most brands. It is definatley worth gettin it fixed rather than just turnin light off. Wouldn't like to be in an accident with a dodgy connector on my airbag system.

You're very certain of a main dealers integrity and product knowledge. Personally, my local Seat Dealer was incompetent at best, and at worst downright dishonest. I don't use Seat dealers any more.

Tried clearing this fault on a friends 1.6 Stylance. Nothing seemed out of place under the seat.
Code & light came straight back on :-(

It's caused by excessive resistance in the connector. Any seat dealer should no the fault and no wot to do.

Starting point check security of connectors & spray on some contact cleaner as matter or course?
