Hi Guys,

So which roof bar would you recommend? I need one for mountain bikes and surfboards..

I see Thule now have a few options, Aero Bar, Wingbar, SlideBar, or should I just go and get a Seat one?

Any advice welcome.

Cheers

Knobby..

I have Thule roof bars and they're spot on. However they seem to leave slight marks on the car. Don't know whether they can be polished out or what

Now I just put a big sheet in the back and take the wheels off the bike and chuck it in the back. What sort of MTBing do you do mate?

Yeah I think all roof bars make marks but they normally polish out.. However I've read some make dents, I certainly wouldn't want that.

I mainly do cross country and getting into downhill. This time of the year the bike is so covered in mud I wouldn't want to put it inside the car, I can spray off the exterior but inside is slightly different.

oooooh I'm also getting into DH, what tracks have you done?? Where you based mate?

It doesn't get muddy as long as you put a rug and a sheet down mate. I take one of the pedals off too so it doesn't dig into the car.

I know what you mean, but like other people have said, it can dent your car, is that what you want?

I've just got Thule aero bars and 2 591 bike racks as I was getting bored of sticking the bikes in the car and the surfboard didn't fit in ( it's a 9'3 longboard haha)
The 591s seem pretty good, they fit my frame real well too! (it's has funny shape tubing)

When I say just, I mean just lol. Helmet and goggles turn up yesterday, going to try a few small runs first. I'm 30 and starting to feel the knocks a little more now so getting all the gear first. Will certainly be a case of all the gear and no idea lol

I'm close to Reading so going to check out The Lookout first.

Pedals off and wheels off is alot of faffing about, I just throw it in the roof of my mk1 at the moment and I'm ready to go.

Really don't want dents thus the reason why I'm doing some research. :)

Cool. Have you had any dent issues? On my mk1 I've had my Seat bars fitted 24/7 as I've always got a bike or a board on the roof.

I recon a 9'3 would go inside a mk1 my 9'6 was just a tad too big. I've moved down to an 8 foot board now and that fitted in fine so hoping it will go in my new Leon. The front seat has to be flat and rear head rests removed but I recon it should go in. Nice on the days you just want to throw it it and don't have any other passengers. Reminds me I must go for a surf soon!

Those Thule bike holders are mega expensive thought ain't they? I've got some £30 quid ones that were rated really well in an auto car review.

Any signs of dents? Do you have them fitted most of the time?

Nah no dints or anything, but saying that, I've only had them on a week or so. But so far I'm impressed!

I got the 591's on fleabay for about 110 quid for 2. They're normally about 80 quid each? Do I didn't think this was too bad. They lock on too which its a bonus if you don't want to be removing them after every ride :)

Hey Knobby

The lookout is good, the 4 official downhill runs they have are very short but lots of fun, if you have not ridden there before it can be difficult to find the good trails as they are not marked very well. Also if you plan to go on the weekend get there early or parking will be a nightmare.

Another place fairly close is Aston hill, the downhills there are a lot steeper and a lot more technical but are a fair bit longer providing you don't mind the 15 min walk back up. I would make sue if you can your first time at Aston is done in the dry as its clay, its mental in the wet.

More importantly what kind of bike have you got :D

Think i'm going to pick myself up some Thule ones tomorrow from Halfords.. need to see the cost difference but I need a roof rack for the weekend so unless one of the online places can delivery next day Halfords is the only option.

I've got a Cube AMS 130 Team, its got 130mm of travel on the back and 150mm of travel at the front.. Its my first full suspension mountain bike mainly purchased it for cross country but as a beginner DH bike too.. Will defo be getting a DH bike at a later date. What you got?

I think we are going to check out The Look out first as its a bit closer and everyone says its pretty good from around here.

The Lookout is great and you will have a blast, lots of great single track to be found as well. I have a 09 Trek Remedy with 160mm travel all round.

Your Cube will be prefect for Swinley (The Lookout) don't forget to buy your day pass ;)

Nice bikes lads ;)

I've got a felt AM bike with 140MM travel front and back. It's a proper tank. I'd love to have a giant glory DH bike or a Trek Session :cheeky::love:

There's a mint DH place down south, but I can't remember the name of it :(

You go for a full face helmet mate??

I'll be putting the roof bars on me car tomorrow as I don't want two bikes in the back. I'll let you know if there's any marks/dents etc. I usually take them off when I don't need them on to be fair.

I'd rather class myself as all the gear no idea, than no gear and a broken arm lol

There are a few good DH places downhill, Aston hill being one of them, the only issue is our hills are not big enough for a really long run :( We usually try to get to Cwm Carn once or twice a year for a nice uplift day though

Felt do make nice bikes and they are built well, would love either the Session or the Glory, though I have heard the Session dents easily, very very sexy bike though.

I'm sure I saw some videos from swinley forest and it looks really fast and flowing!

aye one of me mates was going to get a session but read bad reviews about them :(. I'd love a transition TR450 (google it mate if you haven't heard of them) or a devinci wilson. Me mate has one and it is sooooo nice. Lighter than another lads giant glory!
