So after owning the ibiza for almost 2 years now since day one i thought that the sound deadening wasnt that good. even in low speeds there is to much road noise and noise from the environment around the car that you can easily here with doors closed and all the windows up.
has any of you tried to soundproof the car. what materials can somebody use to achieve this?

What make of tyre are you running?

Seat just don't do very good sound deadening lol. The mk4 is much worse than the mk5 from memory. Tyres do make a difference but on top of that you can sound deaden the floorplan, doors etc and then apply a layer of closed cell foam and then a layer of mass loaded vinyl. Not cheap though...

I've deadened the cabin in my mk4 ibiza and although much better, it's stil too noisey for my liking hence the car being sold!

got the stock tyres. pireli i think?
but its not only the road noise. the whole vehicle isnt soundproofed that well.

is mass loaded vinyl heavy? iwas looking for something lightweight...
did you notice a difference?

the extra weight you will not notice. yeah it did make a good difference. once you start pulling the cabin apart, you will notice that there will be next to none sound deadening/proofing in the car

did you apply anything to the roof? did you have any problems with humidity after applying those materials?

Where do you obtain such data?

From the German AA, ADAC

www.adac.de

They measure all cars at 130 km/h.

Some examples:-

Audi A1 1.2 TFSI 69 dB(A)
SEAT Ibiza 1.4 NA 68 dB(A) - no test of the 1.2 TSI
VW Polo 1.2 TSI 69 dB(A)
SEAT Ibiza Cupra 69 dB(A)
VW Polo GTI 69 dB(A)

Diesels are again similar

.... and despite what the UK journalists say about refinement!!! :-
Ford Fiesta 1.25 Titanium 72 dB(A)
Ford Fiesta 1.6 Titanium 71 dB(A)

That's interesting. I'm sick of hearing about the fiesta. My mate had one and inside is very cheap imo and nowhere near as quiet as a focus. Girls car too imo

did you apply yourself or you had a profesional do it?

Did it myself, very easy. Just used s hairdrier to make sure it adhered properly.

Don't forget that sound levels are logarithmic

3dbA increase will sound TWICE as loud

No it won't. Dont confuse the sound power with the perception of it. Twice the power does not sound twice as loud. 1 dB is generally reckoned to be just about perceptible. 3 dB is definitely perceptible but certainly not twice as loud.

.... and to be perceived as twice as loud you need an increase of about 10dB.
(had to look that one up!)

Agreed. I remember doing decibels in school and 1dB makes literally no difference to the human ear.

Wonder what decibels the mk4's have - probably about 1000 lol

lol indeed. Seriously though there isn't all that much difference between any of the cars tested, at least as far as I've seen. A fancy limo. might be 65 db(A) and a really bad cheapo car might be 75 db(A). The limo. is half as loud but probably costs 10 times as much!
