Tyre sizes on 17" wheels?

I currently have some 17" seat fr wheels on my fr.

The tyre size is 225/45/17

I have seen a set of vw golf alloys on e bay with tyre size 205/40/17 on them all.


If I went to a tyre place, would my tyres of 225/45/17 fit on the vw golf wheels?

You need to find out the actual wheel width if possible. Otherwise you'll be guessing.

Should be on the wheel somewhere so just ask him to check the wheel width. Something like 17x7J ET54 will be stamped on it.

the idea was to swap my tyres over to these wheels then sell my alloys and then sell those no brand tyres.

i could probably put them straight on my car but the gap between the wheel and wheel arch would be stupid.

They don't look very wide and those tyres aren't stretched on them either. Your 225/45/17's will fit properly on a 7-8 inch wide rim so if they're less than that I'd look elsewhere.

Sorry to hijack your thread here but I have a Q about tyres too - My Leon also has 17 inch FR wheels form the factory with 225/45/17 tyres - Could I get away with running 225/50/17 tyres all round ? For no other reason than a bit fo extra comfort!

Not 225/50/17 as the overall diameter is nearly an inch bigger so you'll hoof up the speedo reading, gearing etc.

You'd have to fit 205/50/17 to be approx the same diameter but they'll be skinnier and stretched (which looks **** IMO).

Yes. Not tried it myself though. If the ride is harsh on the standard tyre size try playing around with tyre pressures as that can make a fair bit of difference. Start with the factory settings (32F, 29R) and increase it a bit if need be.

Failing that I'd look at new springs/dampers rather than change tyres.

Thanks again - yes the ride is quite harsh I feel. I'll play about with the pressures first and see how I get on - Do you mean decrease the pressure to add some comfort? How far can you safely go under or above the factory tyre pressure settings?

Don't go under the factory setting. Use that as the lowest setting. Inside the fuel cap should be a sticker with the pressures for different loads. I tend to use 33/30.
