hi there got my new leon on saturday a fr 170 PD with the 225/40/18 tyres on

granted i expected road noise but it seems to develop a wheel bearing type noise. checked all wheels and no play in any of them. the fronts are low and will need replacing asap, would this be the cause of the noise? best i can describe is a really loud rumble type sound. VERY annoying haha!

any ideas? also been looking at pirelli P- zeros to go on the front? any experiences/views?

thanks in advance :D

also the fronts are on 1.6mm rough in the center and have about 3-4mm on either edge? this normal for leons?

thanks

Hi there,

It sounds to me like the front are over inflated, or have been at some point.
Best thing to do is get them changed and then see if the noise goes away, as youll need to do them soon if theyre on 1.6mm anyways.

I had P-Zeros on my Golf GT TDi and the back ones lasted 40,000 miles no bother but the fronts went in less than 10,000 miles from memory. If you take it easy theyre ok in my eyes, but not great. Best tyres Ive had are either Dunlop SportMaxx or Goddyear Eagle F1 Assymetrics. Had the later on both Golf and A4 and were faultless.

check the inside edge of the rears too. There are threads on here about wheel alignment and odd wear on the rears. that can cause a noise like a failing wheel bearing.

cheers guys , i'll have to price up the GY f1's. had an appealing price of £201 inc vat etc on the pirelli's though :p . I'll check out the rear tomorrow, don't want to get wet tonight lol

thanks for the advice :)

As kazand mentioned the alignment, it's definitely something worth getting done properly. If it's not correct then any new tyres will end up wearing the same as the old ones.

I have the same sound, it's really annoying tbh. Had it checked out at my local garage and they said its down to the tyres causing the extra road noise.
Just gonna get some new tyres soon but can't decide whether to get new wheels at the same time.

The golf platforms all create an issue on the rear tyres called "sawtooth wear". This is especially prevalent on tyres with a squareish tread block. There is no way to fix this, other than to rotate your tyres front to back with annoying regularity.
Basically what happens is the leading edge of the tread block wears faster than the trailing edge, resulting in a profile like saw teeth. This makes a loud humming on the road at certain speeds, sounds just like a wheelbearing.

I have 18's on mine and there is a random ditch finder on the drivers side rear that is noisy as hell on the motorway. Judging by the tread it was put on not long before I got the car.

Can't wait to get rid of it.

I don't mind road noise, but it's a really loud rumble more than a hum. I'll have to check them out after work tonight and see how it is. Typically it didn't do this on road test, private sale XD.
Does it from about 30mph onwards? This about right?
Thanks
