hi all
ive just bought a toledo v5 170 model,and having starting problems so ive read previous threads and found its not just me,its obviously a common problem and its getting checked on the diagnostics tomorrow,but what im more concerned about is the lack of power ive read others saying how well theirs pulls in all gears but mine youve got to get to about 5 thou revs before you get any power,if youre doing 60 in fifth youve got to gear down to 2nd to get any power to overtake,i thought it was going to be quite a grunty motor but its like driving an old fiesta,any help would be great guys,because i love the car and want it sorted thanks

Mmm, 60 in fifth and foot flat to the floor would get me over a ton in a handful of seconds... the same in fourth accelerates quicker than my wifes car does in first... a third gear roll on from 60 does a very good job of pushing me deep into the seat and not letting go until I dip the clutch.... and all second gear does at 60 is put me on the rev limiter!

My starting problems were mainly caused by a split breather pipe allowing unmetered air into the throttle body. Wonderful for emissions (stupidly lean mixture) bad for everything else.

Diagnostics is a good start though. I suspect either;

One or more poorly coilpacks.
Dodgy MAF.
Dirty or misaligned throttle body.
Broken or disconnected air pipe.

i spent ages looking for a solution to my cars poor starting. Eventually i gave up and just give it a bit of gas when cold.

update

hi diagnostics said it was a throttle body,bought a second hand one and fitted new battery and it started first time happy days until....left it running for quite a while and it was ticking over spot on,about 1000 then when the temp gauge went up to about half way the revs rose to 1500 so i suspected one of the pipes and turned it off nothing wrong so,tried start again and it wouldnt fire and start again till next morning...nightmare:confused:

After the battery is disconnected you need to drive the car on a varied route for 30 mins or so to allow the ecu to relearn sensor perameters.

The coolant temp sensor is also a weak point on all VAG cars of this age, because it has a wide band to read it rarely give a fault code when out of range

i was told they didnt need to be aligned,is it only vagcom you can use ?

what do you meen by the battery being disconnected,is it start the car and then dissconect the battery ?

You say you've fitted a new battery? Therefore you need to drive the car for approx 30 mins on a varied cycle so that the ecu relearns the various sensors perameters.

If you dissconnect the battery with the engine running you'll damage the alternator and maybe other delicate electronics - don't do it!

ok cheers see what you mean,could the temp sensor be the starting problem then,ive read it could be one of a few sensors but the diagnostics only said throttle body
