Hi everyone, my name is Alex and I've just joined seatcupra.net.

I'd really appreciates some help or ideas please - I have recently bought my first leon fr tdi which is 07 plate. Ive had it for about 4 weeks and I've been really pleased with it! Last week however,I was driving along and a message flashed up on the dial 'engine fault workshop' then went away and a flashing coil flashed for about 10 seconds then went away too.

Since then its started to do it more and more frequently - When it happens I don't lose any power or revs etc, it does seem to affect the car at all. It happens randomly too, sometimes at traffic lights, sometimes on motorway or at 30mph.

I have been in touch with the garage I bought it from and they told me to take it in for a diagnostic. They said there were no faults recorded and that they did not see any error lights. I had given them a video of the message that I took for proof but they reckon there is no fault.

Since I got it back it is going off more and more frequently.

I don't know if this will make a difference or not but I know it's had the injectors replaced under recall. The air filter has been replaced with a k&n air filter(mushroom shaped?!) Not sure if this is related to the filter change or not but there seems to be a lot of black smoke/soot from the exhaust as well...is this fairly normal?

I've had a good look through previous threads and I've read about all sorts of problems but most of them seem to have sustained fault messages on the display or the car losing power/revs. I can't find much about any similar problems to mine and really hoped someone may have some ideas? I forgot to mention that the car is under a 3 month warranty from the garage I bought it from so hopefully if it needs any work doing they can carry it out.

Thanks,

Alex

I think you want to get someone with VCDS (a proper diagnostics tool) to scan it for you

Some of the generic tools will not pick up all codes

The FR came with a DPF, so it shouldn't be all that smokey, but it might be modified & that's been removed - some tuned cars smoke excessively.

If you post up where you live, you might find someone loca who can help with the scanning?

if waas me id be tempted tp get diagnostic done with proper kit even if costs an hours labour, then you know what the fault is before you take it back were you bought from.

then you know you arent just being told any old story

Thanks for the quick reply M0rk!

I spoke to my local Seat garage and they've told me they can diagnose the car for £90.

I think I will go along and it get them to have a look, unless anyone knows of any other garages - I'm based in Southport/Liverpool.

Would having the original air filter refitted solve any if the soot issue do you think?

Thanks again,

Alex

Hi Matthew,

Ive had it for about 6 weeks now so its still under the warranty that the garage offered, its been back to them but they say they can find no fault with it when they plug it into the diagnostic kit they have. Yet the error light still keeps on coming on randomly and going away again - I plan to visit awesome gti at some point next week for them to diagnose then I will report back to the garage I bought it from with any issues that they find for warranty repair.

M0rk mentioned replacing the K&N air filter with the original - unfortunately I do not have this. I would however be willing to trade the K&N kit with anyone for the factory air filter setup if they could remove and install...just an idea.

Thanks guys

6Weeks?! Give them the car back and tell them to drive it so they can see what your talking about. Id defiantly replace the K&N back to standard because they'll no doubt blame it on that, hope you get it fixed!

I have spoken to the garage I bought the car from and also spoken to Awesome GTI.

Awesome have told me to take the car down this weekend and they will get it plugged in and diagnosed for a nominal charge if that.

They were really helpful and very accommodating! I explained some of the issues and the fella I spoke to reckons its more than likely the DPF but obviously cant be too sure. I mentioned the air filter and he didn't seem to think that it would affect anything but couldn't be too sure without seeing it.

The garage I got the car from are happy for me to get it diagnosed and they have agreed that any faults etc that are found will be covered by them under warranty.

Fingers crossed I should have some answers by the weekend, when I do I will report back their findings.

Thanks again for everyones help.
