2nd steel wheel has been bought, come pay day I'll go and get 2 winter tyres fitted and bung them on the front. Will be drivingnout to Cologne in February, and it was pretty bad on last years trip. My old MGzr was useless in the snow, and that had more sensible tyres than the Fr does! Getting stuck is not for me...

I really wouldn't recommend just getting two winter tyres for the front axle. Either get all four or get none.

Just out of interest why is this? I thought they would be better with getting tractions on hills etc. I have a stupidly big hill getting to work so I would have thought they would help. I can understand the dangers of the rear sliding out but I dont intend on going fast. Just thought 2 would be beneficial on the front for those icy/ snowy days.

Lee69 beat me to it, but it's a recipe for still having an accident, just with the rear breaking away. Possibly at a higher speed, as you'll have used your extra traction on the front to good effect, making the rear end breakaway more sudden and less catchable, if it is at all.

slightly off topic, but im presuming that as your going to be buying new tyres, you will also be putting some steelies or old alloys on? Surely all the salt and snow etc will just corode the standard alloys?

Can't you buy the tyre chains? I know they aren't the best looking things, but worst case you can have them in the boot, plus they have to be cheeper the £200 for tyres.

Winter tyres will be an investment.

When I had them for the scoob. They went on in Nov and came off round march.

Still looked like new. They would of easily of seen another 2-3 winters so it's really 50 per winter.

my car hasn't been lowered, yet i still think ill have trouble getting them on. Going to be a bit of a pain as where i live is on a hill.

My car has been lowered and ive heard horror stories of them coming off and causing damag3 to arches. I work in dover docks so they usually keep on top of it down there and being by the sea its never as icy or snowy as up the hill. It could be thick snow up on the cliffs and then the docks have a bit of slush. Think im going to invest in the winter tyres I just found. As mentioned will put on early november and take them off in march time.

I am planning on adding 2x winter to the back..the fronts needed changing badly so opted for winters and didnt have £440 handy for a full set. The front pirellis didnt seem to last very long..

I have 2 expensive winter tyres but only because I got them on ebay very cheap £40 each..... they have been on for 3 months and will get changed when they are bald! winter tyres may be " a little better " but who the hell spends loads of money of 4 x 225 40 18s to use for a few months at the of chance there might be snow lol , id rather just drive slow and let the car roll to a stop , although I don't live near any hills.....

oh ye plus £10 a wheel to swap them over and then another £10 a wheel to take them of in summer

Would a set of 17" wheels fit over the brembos? As I have a set of wheels of my old mk4 golf with 4 winters on them

They are superior in -7 conditions AND snow

I think people with little kids etc are more likely to buy them for added safety.

I needed four new tyres last November so plumped for mid range uniroyal winter tyres - cheaper than a summer set on standard 17" alloys. Worked a treat, we live in hilly area and always get bad weather and have struggled many times previously, was able to get around and use all the back roads while everyone else was stuck in traffic on the main roads. Quite surprised tried some very steep and snowy roads and was able to get up/down with ease where as before would have had no chance. Had already taken time to source a set of alloys for summer tyres which I refurbed and stuck back on once the weather warmed up. Will last me at least three to four winters I reckon
