I suppose it no different from racing each other about on public roads. Something that we've all been guilty of if your being honest.

Nothing like it dude.

1) A trackday isn't a race. People who try to race will be black flagged. You can only over take on one side and not on a corner.

2) There is no police on the track therefore no consequences for speeding, dangerous driving.

3) If it all goes Pete Tong, you have kitty litter, crash barriers, helmets on, marshalls, medics etc all there to assist.

4) You will have signed a disclaimer before going on the track saying you understand and will abide by the rules. If you don't, you will be black flagged (see point 1 above)

5) Lap times will be the result of who is quicker, regardless of who has the "faster" car.


A race is more like what you do at Crail - a standing start and first to cross the line although ironically the first one over the line might not have the faster time as you could sit at the line for a second before booting it and the system will still record your time down the strip.

This is a race - when you come to the final and its first past the line including reaction times. If you sleep at the start, you will lose like Simon did here in his 600 odd bhp Focus RS

A race is when you go to the go karting and go through the stages and end up in a final 8 and the first one over the line against 7 others is the winner ;)

Track etiquette will vary between circuits

for example, Timing of laps is not allowed at most, as it invalidates the circuits insurance, and introduces a "competition" element, which is where some folks try too hard, run out of talent and end up causing crashes and closed track time for everyone else whilst the remains of their antics are cleared up.
 
Yes they will. However he is talking about going to Knockhill where the above applies.

Back 'when I was a lad' I've did the Track experience (XR2, Single seat Ford and Rally car) and also my old modified 300bhp Calibra Turbo round it.
More recently I've done 4 bike track days there, AWESOME wee circuit!!
 
I've been watching a load of vids of the hot hatch days at knockhill and its like wacky races. Its looks to me that the days where the track is rented out by specific car clubs its much better behaved and not as manic.

Johnny Cocker was black flagged the day we did at knockhill back last year or the year before as were 2 or 3 other lads :)

I can honestly say I don;t think I've ever seen anyone black flagged, and I've seen some stupid driving, and loads of 'racing'

Thats for definite. The hot hatch days are nuts, and not the most cost effective way to get on track, but because they're sundays, its when a lot of people can go.
Its when you see sessions out with 90bhp Saxo VTRs and 600bhp GTRs. Its nuts
 
I may be up for it in the near future once the new car is run in - can ask about on other forums too.
 
Track Scotland manage to get it for £100 per car and £10 for an additional driver. I think that's the cheapest I've seen for a 4hr open pit lane session. They manage to fill up all the spaces tho which helps keep the costs down.
 
Add to your £100 noted above a tank of fuel (you will use the best part of a tank in a session), set aside money for premature wear on tyres and £150 for insurance and you will get the idea of total price.

And if you go without insurance and run out of talent/luck.........

To be honest, with a car of that value, you'd be brave not to be insured.

The last 3 were all just scruffy b@stards cars though lol

I will look at track day insurance before i book anything though
 
Just got a price for track day insurance for if I was going to Knockhill

Slightly more expensive than the quote I got for 2 trackdays from Ryan Motorsport Insurance.

Quote said nothing about personal injury and the excess was high so in the end I never bothered with the insurance.
