Start/stop - bug?

I’m on A896 since a couple of weeks now (no further updates showing), but yesterday I noticed something strange.
I start the car and select Normal mode. I disable Start/Stop and then I change to another mode, say Eco, while driving. In this mode the Start/Stop is activated and I can’t deactivate it. Switching back to Normal gives the same result, I can’t deactivate Start/Stop.
I tried to reset the system but that didn’t help either.

The only thing that helped was to restart the engine.
Everything back to normal, but I suspect it will happen again.

I can’t stand the S/S and always deactivate it, so I know that it hasn’t behaved like this before.

Anyone noticed this behavior?

I am guessing this is a further move to enforce the euro6 regulations.
Make it almost impossible to switch off the S/S system.

Before A896 ( or 1896 ) - you could assign one of the shortcuts to S/S
Now you can't

To turn it off while driving you press the car symbol and ”Smart Assistants”.

Today the s/s acts normal again.

AFAIK no one has been able to code it, it's actually one of the very top things on the wishlist for many of us with an OBDeleven.

I think the hybrids don't have the option to turn off S/S at all. I will look in the smart assistant menu next time my engine is running. Fingers crossed!

My VZ 310 has Comfort, Sport, Cupra, Individual and Offroad, no ECO or maybe I have not noticed it! I will check again.

You are correct!
Sorry for confusing, I should have been more specific in my description. I mean Individual mode where you can set engine mode to Eco. The gear selector will then switch from D to E.
Next time you start the engine it will still show Individual mode but gear selector will display D until you toggle to another drive mode and back to Individual mode. Gear selector will then display E again.

I can see that the latest update has removed S/S from the shortcuts.
But it does not matter because disabling S/S does not turn this weird feature off. S/S is active if the car is driving (coasting).

THIS IS CLEARLY AN ERROR IN DESIGN OF START/STOP:

When driving in ECO or NORMAL mode the car goes in ECO Coasting mode very (VERY!!) often.
In effect this means it activates Start/Stop and stops the engine while coasting towards a cross section, slightly downhill etc.

In the eTSI - turning off S/S does this:

1) The engine still stops when coasting (ie S/S is in reality active)
2) When the car stops (at red light etc) - the engine turns on because S/S is disabled.
3) During coasting the engine might turn on and off a few times in order to keep a constant speed or because the distance to a car in front of it is getting short. Then it turns on the engine and brakes a bit.


The ONLY way I have found to avoid a constang turning engine off and on is this:

1) Use SPORT mode (ECO coasting and S/S disabled entirely)
2) In NORMAL / ECO modes a short press on the brake pedal disables ECO Coasting. But only until you have engaged the gas pedal again.


Surely the CORRECT operation would be: In ECO/NORMAL models, disabling S/S also means disabling ECO Coasting.


Note: ECO Coasting in the eTSI means turning the ngine OFF, whereas in the non mild hybrid versions (eg TSI) the ECO Coasting mode has the engine running idle.


I really hope this ECO Coasting is fixed. May raise this in a seperate thread

You're not seriously trying to turn off S/S on a hybrid - which turns the engine off at almost any speed? Kind of defeats the point of hybrid, so of course it's not available on the hybrid (if you just meant you would see if you could on a hybrid SA menu).

I still don't get the hysteria over start / stop, on most manuals it only occasionally cut in (on the various hire cars I've had) assuming it still needs neutral and clutch out. On the last couple of cars (automatic Discovery Sports where it cuts in more) it's always restarted when I take my foot off the brake and before I can touch the throttle. They've even restarted before they've stopped (kind of difficult to explain) at junctions for a very brief stop.

Still, each to their own.

Not permanently no, but I would absolutely like the option to be able to keep the engine running for sporty purposes on rare occasions.
Getting a 0-100 km/h in the hybrids is quite the challenge when you have to do workarounds to keep the engine running at takeoff.

I don't understand why that's not an option.

I would have thought Launch Control was the answer to that!

I've only tried it a couple of times, both in Cupra mode (I believe it'll work in Sport mode too) but the engine was certainly running then!

That would make sense wouldn't it? I've experimented a bit, and when the ICE is off and you try to engage launch control, it usually stutters for me and tries to actually spin the wheels. Sometimes it works though and it kicks into action but it's still rough and feels unreliable.

My workaround is to make a hard run just before coming to a stop. That causes the ICE to be over a thermal threshold where it doesn't turn off for some seconds allowing me to come to a standstill with it still running.

How many 0-100 km/h runs are you doing for this to be an issue.

Generally a bit of wheelspin is seen as beneficial in the 0-60mph dash, but I guess it can only be estimated in road car software due to the uncontrolled variables involved, road surface, tyre type, weather conditions, clutch condition, etc. Hence that's why F1 cars do practice starts and burn outs before the actual start to try and establish the actual conditions before the start.
