Hi all
While iv been looking for a car, iv notice the values of the mk3 Leon seem to hold pretty well but the values of mk 4 Leon’s don’t seem to hold them as-well.
Am I going mad when I see 10yr old leons more money than 4 or 5 yr old Leon’s. Making me think maybe I should get a mk 4 instead.
It's probably the unlit haptic heater controls putting people off...![]()
The MK4 is the reason we still have our MK3, well past the time we had expected to "upgrade".
Mrs Seriously? took one look at the interior, said "if it doesn't have proper buttons to press to work stuff, I ain't interested", turn on her heels and left the building.![]()
That's pretty much exactly what I did. I was in a dealer's shortly after the Mk4 came out and said to the dealer 'I'm not buying a car that makes you go into a touchscreen to adjust the heating.' The buttons for the lights are crap too. Didn't like anything about the car. Dealer was very honest and said 'We've not had a positive comment about the car'.Mrs Seriously? took one look at the interior, said "if it doesn't have proper buttons to press to work stuff, I ain't interested"
I'm really struggling to find a newer car that I like.
Likewise, we're not technophobes; I deal with some pretty high-tech hardware daily at work and Mrs S runs rings round me when it comes to anything computer based, but cars need tactile controls. Yes, I know a lot of it can be voice activated, but I get tired of repeating myself umpteen times just to change the radio station.Loved her reaction!
That's why I recently bought the last of the old generation Cupra's, Ateca. (And also the last of the pure petrol ones, didn't want to deal with brake regen stuff of hybrids)
I was very happy with Mk3 Leon and now I'm very happy with my brand new Ateca since last December, with all the modern gadgets but with old-school buttons everywhere. It is exactly what I need and love so I plan to keep it 10 or more years! Then I might retire from driving at near 70! Don't get me wrong, I'm a software developer who works with new tech constantly and embraces change, but not so much in cars!![]()
I currently run a BMW and that's the same; sump pan - plastic, transmission pan - plastic, oil filter housing - plastic, intake manifold....you get the idea.I'm really struggling to find a newer car that I like. I'm looking at an Audi TT but all the plastic scares the crap out of me. You know the water manifold on the front of the engine is going to go, that's a given, and it may fail more than once, at a grand a time! But The EA888 also has a plastic sump pan, intake manifold etc. I reckon that once these plastics get brittle these engines will be leaking all over the place. Manufacturers don't care as they'll be well out of warranty by then but if you like to keep cars a long time it's a disaster.
But what can you do? They're all like that now. Loads of features but junk quality.
This pretty much sums it up, well writtenThis!
I'd take it one step further: I started to lose my enthusiasm for new model announcements, regardless of brand. I used to get excited to read about upcoming models, their concepts and prototypes etc but not so much anymore, knowing that something's about them would put me off, being EVs or hybrids, having too much screen estate inside with everything haptic etc!![]()
Me too, cancelled my What Car magazine subscription about two years ago cause it was more like reading tech weekly or whatever it would be called. This!

kept my classic retro modern magazine subscription. It takes me back to good times. As does my mk1 Cupra R!

Simples!
I did sit in and looked at a brand new Civic type R a few months back. Honestly, it’s the only brand new car I would have, so till my lotto numbers come up I’ll carry on with my 17 year old Legacy estate and my Cupra R and enjoy every moment of simple motoring while I can.
Look how aesthetically-pleasing that MK1 dash design is too.Me too, cancelled my What Car magazine subscription about two years ago cause it was more like reading tech weekly or whatever it would be called.

Well to my eyes anyway...
Yes they did.Agree. There’s a lot to be said for having a simple no-frills dash that don‘t distract the driver, unlike many of the modern touchscreen-dominated dashboards.
Didn’t the mk1 Leon and mk1 Audi A3 share the same dash?
