Hi all
While iv been looking for a car, iv notice the values of the mk3 Leon seem to hold pretty well but the values of mk 4 Leon’s don’t seem to hold them as-well.

Am I going mad when I see 10yr old leons more money than 4 or 5 yr old Leon’s. Making me think maybe I should get a mk 4 instead.

It's probably the unlit haptic heater controls putting people off... :)

Your joking! Are they really not illuminated, to be honest I prefer the design of mk3, maybe I need to have a test drive of a mk4, the haptic controls I don’t know if I like the thought of them. Can’t beat pressing an actual button

The Mk4 isn't a popular car, nobody likes it. I wouldn't buy one. I'm looking at an Audi TT to replace my MK3 Leon.

You need to drive both motors, the latest MQB Platform cars have had a lot of issues so I suspect resale prices are reflecting that.

Bottom line though you need to drive both and then decide what is best for you.

The MK4 is the reason we still have our MK3, well past the time we had expected to "upgrade".
Mrs Seriously? took one look at the interior, said "if it doesn't have proper buttons to press to work stuff, I ain't interested", turn on her heels and left the building.😆

Loved her reaction!

That's why I recently bought the last of the old generation Cupra's, Ateca. (And also the last of the pure petrol ones, didn't want to deal with brake regen stuff of hybrids)

I was very happy with Mk3 Leon and now I'm very happy with my brand new Ateca since last December, with all the modern gadgets but with old-school buttons everywhere. It is exactly what I need and love so I plan to keep it 10 or more years! Then I might retire from driving at near 70! Don't get me wrong, I'm a software developer who works with new tech constantly and embraces change, but not so much in cars! 😄

That's pretty much exactly what I did. I was in a dealer's shortly after the Mk4 came out and said to the dealer 'I'm not buying a car that makes you go into a touchscreen to adjust the heating.' The buttons for the lights are crap too. Didn't like anything about the car. Dealer was very honest and said 'We've not had a positive comment about the car'.

I'm really struggling to find a newer car that I like. I'm looking at an Audi TT but all the plastic scares the crap out of me. You know the water manifold on the front of the engine is going to go, that's a given, and it may fail more than once, at a grand a time! But The EA888 also has a plastic sump pan, intake manifold etc. I reckon that once these plastics get brittle these engines will be leaking all over the place. Manufacturers don't care as they'll be well out of warranty by then but if you like to keep cars a long time it's a disaster.

But what can you do? They're all like that now. Loads of features but junk quality.

This!

I'd take it one step further: I started to lose my enthusiasm for new model announcements, regardless of brand. I used to get excited to read about upcoming models, their concepts and prototypes etc but not so much anymore, knowing that something's about them would put me off, being EVs or hybrids, having too much screen estate inside with everything haptic etc! 😔

Likewise, we're not technophobes; I deal with some pretty high-tech hardware daily at work and Mrs S runs rings round me when it comes to anything computer based, but cars need tactile controls. Yes, I know a lot of it can be voice activated, but I get tired of repeating myself umpteen times just to change the radio station.

I currently run a BMW and that's the same; sump pan - plastic, transmission pan - plastic, oil filter housing - plastic, intake manifold....you get the idea.
Not surprisingly, it's the plastic bits on the particular engine fitted to my car that are the bits known to give grief.

Me too, cancelled my What Car magazine subscription about two years ago cause it was more like reading tech weekly or whatever it would be called.
kept my classic retro modern magazine subscription. It takes me back to good times. As does my mk1 Cupra R!

Simples!
I did sit in and looked at a brand new Civic type R a few months back. Honestly, it’s the only brand new car I would have, so till my lotto numbers come up I’ll carry on with my 17 year old Legacy estate and my Cupra R and enjoy every moment of simple motoring while I can.

Totally agree on current Civic Type R. I just love its cabin; after generations of dashboards with cheap spaceship-looks, current one looks simply wonderful. 💕

Just to add to this I was on a Track Day couple weeks ago and talking to a Triumph Mk4 and Mk4a owners (and this is a very common theme for guys who own older cars). "People worry about me driving this motor but I love it because there are no gadgets, you steer from the front and the rear, No ABS and proper controls, its alive. If I crash it I get the welder out and fix it whats the point of putting it in a glass box and never using it"

I even met a guy with a BMW Estate (no idea what it was) and he wont replace the car because its a proper manual gearbox he hated anything that was to electronic he wanted to be in control. So much so that he just buys older parts and gets then refurbished so he can keep it on the road

Now we are all different but Mines only 10 years old and I certainly turned off most of the nanny functions for road use and on track all turned off.

Look how aesthetically-pleasing that MK1 dash design is too.
Well to my eyes anyway...

I personally think the Mk4 is too little too late more than anything. Hatchbacks are on the way out in general as people order (note - I didn't use the word buy...) daft psudo-SUV things in their droves instead. I've seen far more Seat Aronas, Atecas and the Skoda one than I have the mk4 Leon. It's also, as a model, pretty cheap and nasty (I had one on rental in Europe recently) and noticed a real serious drop in quality compared to my own Mk3. I also felt the same in a recent Golf I was driving. Considering it's basically just a tarted up Mk3.5 with some smoothed edges, it's hardly the huge leap the Mk2 to the Mk3 was, for example.

But in reality - I think it's how consumers operate now, that's changed the products we're being offered. I was talking about this yesterday to some friends. It doesn't matter if its music, movies, cars, whatever it is, the quality has dropped hugely in the past 10 years and in my opinion it's purely because we don't buy anything any longer. What's the point in making a quality item to sell outright when 99% of your "sales" come from people paying for a thing monthly?

Think about it. Nobody buys CDs, they use Spotify. Nobody buys movies, they use Netflix. Nobody buys cars, they lease them. We're firmly in the era of 'borrow-and-bin-it' of motoring/consumerism and I don't see it changing any time soon.

@piggasinnaris indeed, hits the nail on the head I think.

In the Netherlands, its no different. (pseudo) SUVs are a very common sight

[edit]
Im probably one of the few users who use an iPod for audio in the car 🧓. I have all my music locally and only have Netflix as a streaming service (for my girlfriend)
