I get the impression that the "mild hybrid" 48v system was a gimmick to allow the group to class vehicles as hybrids.

They offer no benefits over the non hybrid 1.5TSI engine and the tax cost was the same for the mild hybrid and non hybrid.

Just on tax breaks, this engine likely wasn't built for the UK alone... e.g. in Spain it qualifies for an ECO badge, which is one step up from zero emissions. It means cheaper tax, some reduced motorway tolls, and unhindered/cheaper entrance to LEZ areas (though these are far from consistent).

I quite like the way the 48v lets it disconnect the engine and glide - again, perhaps something you can use more on open and uncluttered European motorways than on UK ones.

Something my father use to do put it in neutral and glide ... old Austin. Cresta or something or other. When running short of petrol....

To be fair the Mild Hybrid seems ok to me. It gives you an electric boost when you move off, so you use a bit less fuel, and then it reads the speed limit and regen brakes you when you approach a junction.
The fuel economy seems to benefit, low 50s mpg is easily achievable.
It will be more expensive when it breaks, but we'll probably change it when the warranty ends or extend the warranty.

Just driven 90 mins this morning, 17 miles from East London to SouthWest London (Canary Wharf to Sutton), via Rotherhithe Tunnel, Elephant and Castle and South London minor roads, all with the speed limit of 20mph or under , still getting a respectable 47.9mpg. Impressive.

Yes those 20mph speed limits have spread... Just not Wales. I use to get 65mpg out of my old Uno ES 900cc. Terrible on carburettor icing thou. Would grind to a stand still on motorway inclines and going up hills. Oh here we go. You have to pull over. Turn off. Restart and off you go. Put me off petrol engines for life .

My retrun trip from Sutton back home yesterday was even worse - start of the evening rush hours, with hundreds of office workers becoming cyclists riding beside me on those 20mph-limited roads, just like what we saw in the Tour de France coverage on tele

Cyclists overtake you round here. One had an illegal electric bike that shot past the retired head of traffic police's house at about 60mph. No head protection. Only saw it once. Mind you anarchy did prevail when the 20mph limit was put in with many thinking it didn't apply to them and neither the speed limits on non effected roads.
