We have obtained fresh spy shots of the CUPRA Terramar testing at the Nürburgring in Germany, and a few details suggest this could be more than just a regular version of the SUV.

In truth, this is something we expected to see sooner or later. From the start, the Terramar has felt like a car with room in the range for something a bit more serious, and these latest images only add weight to that view.

The clearest clue is at the back, where this test...

I joined to reply. Although been lurking for a bit, as I was researching what car to get, and am currently awaiting a build date for a VZ2 2.0 265hp variant.

I'm not convinced by the news in the OP. Seen it on reddit, and there's not a lot of info, the originating article, that came with the pictures, had no corroborating evidence that it was Cupra running a test, other than they said so. Could just be a tuner, either an individual, or a garage running a test. The boxes you can put in raise the output to roughly the reported power level.

My only gripe is, if true, I'd have waited for it!

If only there was a lower range to the Cupra called perhaps Seat where the regular Cupras could be sold then there would be headroom  . I joke. Still with EVs you wont need those emotive exhaust pipes 😊.

Saw a tasty Terramar in black at Lidl yesterday. Process of elimination a car of that size with a badge saying Cupra and no green number plate... if only they said what the car was on the badge.

As you say it could be one of those companies that spice up a standard car. Got to have different power train and not tarted up to pass the test. "familiar 2.0-litre 4Drive powertrain" ?.

Hi, thanks for joining. Yes, this is speculation, but I'd be willing to confidently wager that this is CUPRA testing and that this is a VZ mule.

Reasons:

1. We've seen this kind of thing many times before a hotter version comes out
2. CUPRA will want a halo car for the model; they always do
3. The car was covered during transit
4. The brakes are lifted straight off the other VZ models and not aftermarket ones
5. We've directly asked the question before to CUPRA execs and product teams at the Terramar launches, "You'll no doubt be bringing out a VZ version", and were met with a knowing smile, but "no comment" :)

I don't think it will have the 2.5-litre engine, as another publication speculated, though.

I know your pain, I'm gutted they are making a TCR version of the Leon, although I'm sure it's going to be silly money I couldn't afford.

Having switched from a 300PS VZ2 Ateca to a 265PS VZ2 Terramar I can state with confidence that there is very little difference in the real world performance - the Terramar can be properly quick if one desires.

Given that VAG are in the business of selling vehicles and most of their high-volume sales brands have a tendency to release a 300PS+ model it seems quite possible that the Terramar would get an uprated 2.0 petrol engine - VZ3 probably?

One can almost guarantee the Audi will launch an SQ3 too - who knows, maybe a development mule for both.
