Hotter CUPRA Terramar VZ spotted testing at the Nürburing

Our latest spy shots suggest CUPRA could be developing a hotter Terramar VZ, likely with quad exhausts, Akebono brakes and the familiar 2.0-litre 4Drive powertrain.

We have obtained fresh spy shots of the CUPRA Terramar testing at the Nürburgring in Germany, and a few details suggest this could be more than just a regular version of the SUV.

In truth, this is something we expected to see sooner or later. From the start, the Terramar has felt like a car with room in the range for something a bit more serious, and these latest images only add weight to that view.

The clearest clue is at the back, where this test car is running quad exhausts, the same as the hotter Formentor and Leon models. That immediately points to something higher up the range than the standard Terramar models we have seen so far, suggesting CUPRA may be preparing a more performance-focused variant.

The brake setup is interesting, too. This prototype appears to use Akebono brakes, as fitted to the CUPRA Leon and Formentor VZ3. On this particular car, though, they do not seem to be paired with drilled discs, which may mean this is not the final specification or simply that CUPRA is testing a specific hardware combination.

Taken together, the signs point towards a hotter Terramar, and the most likely route still feels like a version using the familiar 2.0-litre petrol engine with 4Drive. That would make plenty of sense within the wider CUPRA range and would fit neatly with what we have suggested before in our own Terramar coverage. A stronger VZ-style model always felt like a likely next step, and this prototype looks to support that.

At this stage, we would be cautious about going too far beyond that. There is enough here to suggest something more focused is being developed, but not enough to say exactly where CUPRA will pitch it or what badge it will wear. What does seem clear is that this is unlikely to be just another standard Terramar.

If CUPRA is indeed working on a sharper Terramar with the 2.0-litre engine, four-wheel drive and a more aggressive chassis and exhaust setup, it could end up being a very appealing addition to the range. The Terramar already has the right proportions and presence for it, and a proper performance version would only strengthen its place in the line-up.

For now, we will keep watching the details. But based on these latest Nürburgring spy shots, there does look to be something more interesting brewing beneath the skin.
